SUMMARY:Indira Ekadasi 6th Oct 2026
DESCRIPTION:The delightful exultations of Indira Ekadasi are described in the Brahma-vaivarta Purana in the conversation between Sri Krsna and Maharaja Yudhisthira. Maharaja Yudhisthira enquired: “O Krsna! O Madhusudana! O Killer of the demon Madhu! What is the name of the Ekadasi that occurs during the waning moon in the month of Asvina (September/October)\, what is the process for following this sublime vrata (vow)\, and what merit is obtained by observing it?” \nLord Krsna replied\, “The name of this sacred and clement Ekadasi is Indira Ekadasi. By Observing this Ekadasi the sinful reactions of all one’s forbearers as well as one’s own sinful reactions are entirely eradicated. \n“O King! There was once a regal and prosperous king named Indrasena\, who lived in Satya-Yuga. He was very expert in subduing his enemies and ruled his kingdom with great compassion. Surrounded by his children and grandchildren\, he lived happily in his city of Mahismatipuri. He was always attached to the devotional service of Lord Visnu. Being a devotee constantly absorbed in cultivating and distributing spiritual knowledge\, the king spent his time chanting the holy names of Sri Govinda\, the bestower of liberation. \n“One day as the King was happily sitting on his royal throne\, Sri Narada Muni suddenly appeared before him from the sky. Upon seeing the sage Narada\, King Indrasena rose up with folded palms and offered his respectful obeisances unto him. The King then duly worshipped Narada Muni with sixteen ingredients. Once the sage was happily seated\, he asked Indrasena\, “O great King is everyone happy and prosperous in your kingdom? Is your mind fixed in religious principles\, and are you engaged in devotional service to Visnu?” \n“The King replied\, O best of sages! Everything is well and auspicious by your kind mercy. Today my life has become successful by your darsana and my performance of sacrifices has born fruit. O sage among the demigods! Please tell me the cause of your blessed visit.” \n“After hearing these humble words of the King\, Narada Muni said: ‘O lion-like King! Now hear about a wonderfully fortunate incident that took place\, prior to my arrival. O best of Kings! Once I went to the abode of Yamaraja from the abode of Lord Brahma\, Yamaraja greeted me respectfully and worshipped me with great pomp and fervour. After being comfortably seated\, I offered prayers to the pious and truthful Yamaraja. Then I saw your greatly pious father in the assembly of Yamaraja. As a result of breaking a vow\, your father had to go there. O King! He gave me a message and requested me to convey it unto you. He said\, ‘Indrasena\, the king of Mahismatipuri\, is my son. O Lord\, please tell him that due to some sinful activities committed in my previous life I am now living in the abode of the Lord of death! Yamaraja! Therefore\, in order to free me from my fate\, he should observe the vow of Ekadasi known as Indira Ekadasi\, and give away it’s piety to me. Then I will be released from my present condition of life.’ Narada Muni continued\, ‘O King This is your father’s request\, in order to deliver your father to the spiritual world\, you should observe the vow of Indira Ekadasi.’ \n“King Indrasena said: ‘O sage amongst the demigods\, kindly explain to me the procedure for following this Indira Ekadasi.’ Narada Muni replied: “On the day before Ekadasi one should take bath early in the morning and with faith and enthusiasm offer oblations to the forfathers\, for their satisfaction. On that day one should eat only once and sleep on the floor at night. On the day of Ekadasi one should rise early in the morning\, brush his teeth\, wash his hands and mouth and take bath. Thereafter he should take a vow to not indulge in any material enjoyment and thus observe a total fast. He should also pray to the Lord\, saying ‘O lotus-eyed one\, I take shelter of you.’ \n“Thereafter he should feed the brahmanas with sumptuous prasadam and give them daksina. At the end one should give the prasadi remnants to the cows. During the day one should worship Lord Hrsikesa by offering sandalwood paste\, flowers\, incense\, lamp and foodstuffs with devotion. One should remain awake throughout the night while chanting\, hearing and remembering the names\, forms\, qualities and pastimes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One should then breakfast at the appropriate time by eating along with his brothers\, children\, grandchildren and relatives while maintaining silence. O King! If you follow this Ekadasi as I have just described\, then your father will certainly attain the abode of Visnu.’ After speaking in this way\, Narada Muni\, took his leave and departed. \n“As per the instructions of Narada Muni\, King Indrasena strictly observed this Ekadasi accompanied by his children\, servants and others. As a result of observing this Ekadasi\, flowers showered from the sky and the father of King Indrasena immediately rode on the back of Garuda to abode of Lord Visnu. Then the saintly King Indrasena ruled his kingdom without any impediment\, and at the end of his life he entrusted the kingdom to his son and personally returned to the spiritual world. Such are the unsurmountable glories of Indira Ekadasi. Anyone who reads of hears the narration for this Ekadasi becomes free from all sinful reactions and ultimately returns to the abode of Visnu.”

SUMMARY:Durga Puja 17th Oct 2026
DESCRIPTION:Durga Puja is one of the significant Hindu festivals\, celebrated with much joy in the entire country. \nThe occasion marks the occassion of Lord Rama and brother Lakshman approaching Mother Durga to ask her for her blessings in His planned attack on the demon Ravana. It is therefore considered that the Supreme Personality of Godhead’s approaching her for blessings to remove material impediments to His spiritual goals should be the approach of the humble devotee of the Lord to clinche the important triumph of Lord Rama over the demon king\, Ravana\, the victory of good over evil.

SUMMARY:Sripada Madhvacarya 21st Oct 2026
DESCRIPTION:For twelve years Madhyageha Bhatta would regularly travel the eight miles north from his village of Belle to Udupi. There at the Anantesvara temple he would pray for a son.\nOne day a devotee in a trance like state climbed the temple flagpole and announced that to reestablish the purest principles of religion\, a male child\, an incarnation of Vayu\, the demigod in charge of air\, would soon be born. Madhyageha understood within his heart that this would be his own child. Soon his wife\, Vedavati\, gave birth to a son. The happy couple named him Vasudeva.\n\nFrom infancy Vasudeva showed extraordinary intellect\, so much so that he was given brahminical initiation at age five\, three years early. Whatever he heard or read\, even just once\, he could remember. His body was unusually strong\, lustrous\, and beautiful.\n\nAt age eleven\, Vasudeva left home for Udupi\, to live with Acyutapreksa\, an ascetic widely respected for his scholarship and saintly character.\nAfter one year\, despite strong protests from his father\, Vasudeva renounced the world.\nAcyutapreksa named him Purnaprajna.\n\nLess than forty days after taking sannyasa\, Purnaprajna defeated Vasudeva Pandita\, a famous wandering scholar\, in public debate. The pandita was known for his hair-splitting dialectical ability\, but he was no match for the young Purnaprajna. The pandita spoke for three days and then dared anyone to refute his conclusions. Purnaprajna shocked the crowd when he accepted the challenge. First\, to show he had a full grasp of the issues\, he repeated almost verbatim the pandita’s arguments. Then\, one by one\, he smashed them all. His victory was the talk of Udupi. Acyutpreksa gave him the title Anandatirtha\, in recognition of his mastery of Vedanta.\n\nWord spread far and wide about the debating skill of the young ascetic in Udupi. Challengers and admirers converged on the town. Buddhisagara and Vadisimha\, two Buddhist monks who had converted many to their fold\, challenged Anandatirtha. After a day-long skirmish\, they promised to return the next day. That night\, however\, they secretly fled from Udupi.\nAnandatirtha went on a tour of South India. The most notable events on this tour were two encounters with Vidyasankara Swami\, the lineal successor to Sripad Sankaracarya\, who was the original propounder of the monistic theory of the Absolute Truth. \n \nSome basic tenets of Sankaracarya’s philosophy are as follows :\n \nGod and the soul are identical; the formless\, senseless\, impersonal Absolute is the only reality; all else is illusion; and the incarnations of God are all products of illusion.\nAnandatirtha was toughly familiar with this philosophy\, so he knew all its weak points. With firmness and courage he challenged the venerated Vidyasankara\, and a fierce debate ensued. Vidyasankara could not defeat his opponent\, yet he refused to accept defeat. They met again\, in Ramesvaram\, during the monsoon season\, at which time Vidyasankara taunted and harassed Anandatirtha. But the young saint tolerated the abuse.\n \nOn his return journey\, while addressing an assembly of learned men\, Anandatirtha stated that every Vedic utterance conveyed a triple meaning\, that each verse of the Mahabharata had ten meanings\, and that each of the thousand prominent names of Lord Visnu had a hundred meanings.\n \nWhen the astonished assembly demanded he prove his statement\, Anandatirtha explained a hundred meanings of Visva\, the first name of Visnu. Before he could proceed further\, however\, they begged him to stop\, admitting they did not have the intelligence to comprehend his elaborate explanations.\n \nBack in Udupi\, Anandatirtha\, who was now known as Madhva\, wrote a commentary on Bhagavad-gita and gave a copy to Acyutapreksa for his approval. Madhva’s next tour was to Badarinatha\, high in the Himalayas.\n \nIn Badarinatha he met Srila Vyasadeva\, the author of the four Vedas and their voluminous supplementary literature. In preparation for this meeting\, Madhva had observed complete silence and complete fasting for forty-eight days. He learned the full meaning of the Vedanta-sutra\, the distilled essence of the Vedic wisdom\, from the transcendental author himself and promised to write a commentary on the sutras\, one that would be faithful to Srila Vyasadeva’s original intent and purport.\n \nBy the time he came down from the Himalayas\, his commentary\, Sutra-bhasya\, was completed. He sent a copy ahead to Udupi for Acyutapreksa’s approval.\n \nOn his return trip\, Srila Madhvacarya converted Sobhana Bhatta and Sami Sastri to Vaisnavism. They later became successors to Madhva\, as Padmanabha Tirtha and Narahari Tirtha. Madhva refused to let Narahari take sannyasa\, ordering him to remain in his high government position\, in return for which he was to obtain the Deities of Mula Rama and Sita\, lying in the King of Kalinga’s treasury.\n\nFor many years Narahari remained in that service\, until finally\, just three months before Madhva’s departure from this world\, Narahari brought the ancient images of Sita-Rama to his guru. These were the original Deities of Rama and Sita\, worshiped by Maharaja Iksvaku and then by Maharaja Dasaratha\, the father of Lord Rama. Then during the time of Lord Krsna’s advent\, the Pandavas gave them to the Gajapati kings of Orissa. Eventually the Deities were kept in the kings’ treasury.\n\nWhile still in his twenties\, Srila Madhvacarya undertook a second tour to Badarinatha\, this one after he had founded Sri Krsna Matha in Udupi. On the way\, a tyrannical king pressed Madhva’s party into digging a reservoir for the city of Devagiri. Madhva\, however\, persuaded the king himself to take part in the digging and then left with his party. The pilgrims had many other hardships and adventures\, but Madhva always saved them with his quick thinking and mystic powers. In Badarinatha\, Madhva again heard from Vyasa\, who gave him eight sacred Salagrama stones.\n\nOn the return trip Madhva stopped in Goa\, where he enacted an amazing gastronomical feat. \nPreviously he had eaten a thousand bananas in one sitting. But in Goa\, he out did his earlier record. He ate four thousand bananas and then drank thirty pots of milk. \nWhen asked to prove that plants indeed respond to music\, Madhva took a few seeds in his hand and began singing in his melodious voice. The seeds sprouted\, Madhva continued singing\, and the plants grew\, swaying to the melody. Madhva continued singing. The plants grew into full maturity and yielded fruits and flowers. News of this feat spread everywhere.\nFrom Udupi Madhva travelled south again. In Visnumangalam he debated with Trivikramacarya\, a logician and grammarian of remarkable skill\, who was able to make the Sanskrit language convey any meaning that suited his purpose. The debate lasted fifteen days\, and in the end Trivikrama surrendered at Madhva’s feet. A full account of that debate is given the Madhva-vijaya\, written by the son of Trivikramacarya. News of Trivikrama’s conversion brought hundreds more men and women into Madhva’s fold. His life’s mission thus became firmly rooted in India.\nSrila Madhvacarya wrote thirty-nine books clarifying the tenets of Vaisnavism and showing Vaisnavism to be the true Vedic religion. In many of his works he attacked the monistic creed of Sankaracarya’s followers\, exposing their doctrine as subversive to genuine spiritual understanding. Unable to defeat Madhva by argument\, certain groups of monists conspired to impede Madhva’s mission by less honourable means. They tried to defame him\, declaring him to be a heretic and all his followers outcastes. They even stole his writings and his valuable collection of ancient books\, thinking that without literature his mission would be finished.\n\nSomehow\, King Jaya Simha of Visnumangalam acquired the books and returned them to Madhvacarya. Madhva had appeared in two other incarnations. During the time of Lord Krsna’s appearance on the earth he appeared as the warrior Bhima\, one of the five Pandava brothers.\n\nDuring the time of Lord Rama\, he incarnated as the beloved Hanuman\, the ideal servant of the Supreme Lord. And\, as in those incarnations\, Madhva performed many feats of strength and displayed mystical perfections.\n\nAs a child he would appear suddenly in one mighty leap from anywhere in response to his mother’s call. In school he cured a friend’s headache by blowing into his ear. To help his father out of debt he turned tamarind seeds into money. On two occasions he made seeds sprout into plants by singing. An enormous rock in Ambu Tirtha\, requiring at least fifty men to move it\, bears an inscription stating that Madhvacarya placed it there with one hand. Many times Madhva made small quantities of food increase for distribution to hundreds of people. At the age of seventy-nine\, his mission well established\, Srila Madhvacarya passed away. His devotees say he went to Badarinatha to join Srila Vyasadeva.\n\nThe essential principles of Sri Madhvacarya’s teachings-where they run parallel to the teachings of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu-have been summarized in ten points by Baladeva Vidyabhusana in his Prameya-Ratnavali. These ten points are as follows:\n\nshri madvhah praha vishnum paratamam akhilamnaya vedyam ca cisvam\nsatyam bhedam ca jivam hari carana jusas tartamyam ca tesham\nmoksham vishnv-anghri-labham tad-amala-bhajanam tasya hetum pramanam\npratyaksadi trayam cety upadisati hari krsna-caitanya chandra\n\n“Shri Madhvacaharya taught that:\n1) Krishna\, who is known as Hari is the Supreme Lord\, the Absolute.\n2) That Supreme Lord may be known through the Vedas.\n3) The material world is real.\n4) The jivas\, or souls\, are different from the Supreme Lord.\n5) The jivas are by nature servants of the Supreme Lord.\n6) There are two categories of jivas: liberated and illusioned.\n7) Liberation means attaining the lotus feet of Krishna\, that is\, entering into an eternal relationship of service to the Supreme Lord.\n8) Pure devotional service is the cause of this relationship.\n9) The truth may be known through direct perception\, inference\, and Vedic authority. These very principles were taught by Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.” \nIn his Caitanya Caritamrta commentary (CC Madhya 9.245)\, Sripad Bhakdivedanta Swami comments: “For further information about Madhvacarya\, one should read Madhva-vijaya by Narayana Acarya.”

SUMMARY:Papankusa Ekadashi 22nd Oct 2026
DESCRIPTION:Yudhishthira maharaj said\, Oh Madhusudana\, what is the name of the Ekadasii that comes during the light fortnight of the month of Ashvina (September – October)? Please be merciful and disclose this truth to me.” The Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna replied\, “Oh king\, please listen as I explain the glories of this Ekadasi- Papankusha Ekadasi – which removes all sins. On this day one should worship the Deity of Padmanabha\, the lotus naveled Lord Vishnu\, according to the rules of archana viddhi (regulations). By so doing\, one achieves whatever heavenly pleasures one may want in this world\, and at last attains liberation from this world thereafter. \nSimply by offering one’s humble obeisances unto Lord Vishnu\, the rider of Garuda\, one can achieve the same merit as is gained by performing great penances for a long time restraining and controlling the senses. Although a person might have committed unlimited and abominable sins\, he can still escape hellish punishment just by paying his obeisances to Lord Sri Hari\, the taker away of all sin.” “The merits gained by going on pilgrimage to the Holy Tirthas of this earthly planet can also be achieved simply by chanting the Holy names of Lord Vishnu. Whosoever chants these sacred names – such as Rama\, Vishnu\, Janardana or Krishna – especially on Ekadasi\, never sees Yamaraj\, the king of death’s punishing abode. \nNor does such a devotee who fasts on Papankusha Ekadasi\, which is very dear to Me\, see that plutonic abode.” “Both the Vaishnava who criticizes Lord Shiva and the Shaivite (Saivite) who criticizes Me certainly go to hell. The merit obtained by performing one hundred horse sacrifices and one hundred Rajasurya sacrifices is not even equal to one sixteenth of the merit a devotee is able to attain by fasting on Ekadasi. There is no higher merit one can achieve than that attained by fasting on Ekadasi. Indeed\, nothing in all the three worlds is as pleasing or as able to purify one of accumulated sin as Ekadasi\, the day of the lotus-naveled Lord\, Padmanabha. “O king\, until a person observes a fast on the day of Lord Padmanabha named Papankusha Ekadasi\, he remains sinful\, and the reactions of his past sinful activities never leave him like a chaste wife. There is no merit in all the three worlds that can match the merit that one gains by observing a fast on this Ekadasi. Whosoever observes it faithfully never has to see death personified\, Lord Yamaraj. \nOne who desires liberation\, elevation to the heavens\, good health\, beautiful women\, wealth\, and food grains should simply fast on this Pashunkusha Ekadasi. O king\, neither the Ganges\, Gaya\, Kashi\, nor Pushkara\, nor even the Holy site of Kurukshetra\, can grant as much auspicious merit as this Papankusha Ekadasi. “O Maharaj Yudhishthira\, protector of the earth\, after observing Ekadasi during the daytime\, the devotee should remain awake through the night\, absorbed in hearing\, chanting and serving the lord – for by so doing he easily attains to the Supreme abode of Lord Vishnu. Not only that\, but ten generations of ancestors on his mother’s side\, ten generations on his father’s side\, and ten generations on his wife’s side are all liberated by a single observance of a fast on this Ekadasi. All these ancestors attain their original\, four armed transcendental Vaikuntha forms. Wearing yellow garments and beautiful garlands\, they ride to the spiritual realm on the back of Garuda\, the renown great enemy of the snakes. This is the benediction My devotee earns simply by observing one Papankusha Ekadasi properly. \n“O best of kings\, whether one is a child\, a youth\, or in old age\, fasting on Papankusha Ekadasi frees him from all sins and makes him immune to suffering a hellish rebirth. Whosoever observes a fast on the Papankusha Ekadasi becomes free of all his sins and returns to the spiritual abode of Lord Sri Hari. Whosoever donates gold\, sesame seeds\, fertile land\, cows\, grain\, drinking water\, an umbrella\, or a pair of shoes on this most auspicious of Holy days will never have to visit the abode of Yamaraj\, who always punishes the sinners. But if a resident of earth fails to perform spiritual deeds\, especially the observance of a fast on days such as Ekadasi\, his breathing is said to be no better\, or of as much use as the breathing/puffing of a blacksmith’s bellows. \n“O best of the kings\, especially on this Papankusha Ekadasi\, even the poor should first bathe and then give some charity according to their means\, and perform other auspicious activities in accordance with their ability. “Whosoever performs sacrifices and benefits the people\, or builds public ponds\, resting places\, gardens\, or houses does not suffer the punishments of Yamaraj. Indeed\, one should understand that a person much have performed such pious activities as these in the past life if he is long lived\, wealthy\, of high birth\, or free from all diseases. But a person who observes Papankusha Ekadasi goes to the abode of the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, Vishnu. Lord Sri Krishna then concluded\, “Thus\, Oh saintly Yudhishthira\, I have narrated to you the glories of the auspicious Papankusha Ekadasi.” Thus ends the narration of the glories of the Papankusha Ekadasi\, or Ashwina-shukla Ekadasi\, from the Brahma-vaivarta Purana.

SUMMARY:Fourth Month of Caturmasya Begins 27th Oct 2026
DESCRIPTION:Fourth month: No Ural Dal. \nCaturmasya stands for ‘four months’. It is the period between sayana and uttana ekadasis. The scriptures refer to this period as the duration of Lord Visnu’s sleep in this universe. \nThe main goal of observing Caturmasya is to decrease attachment to material things and to increase devotion to Krishna.\nSrila Prabhupada writes in Caitanya Caritamrta\, “Caturmasya should be observed by all sections of the population. It does not matter whether one is a grihasta or a sanyasi. The observation is obligatory to all ashramas.” He further explains how to observe the vow: “This is not very difficult. In the month of Sravana one should not eat spinach (green leafy vegetables of the nature)\, in the month of Bhadra one should not eat yogurt (yogurt used as binding agent for cake is allowed)\, and in the month of Asvina one should not drink milk (milk sweets\, milk by-products are fine). One should not eat fish or other non-vegetarian food during the month of Kartik. Masura dal and urad dal being high in protein is also considered non-vegetarian.” Thus during caturmasya one should practice to give up all food intended for sense enjoyment. However\, maha-prasad\, though containing restricted item can be honoured! \nIt is stated in Hari Bhakti Vilasa 15/113 that ‘after properly praying to the Supreme Lord near Him\, one should properly take a vow to follow the proper rules and regulations and process of caturmasya to increase one’s devotion to Lord Sri Krishna.’\nSo please take this opportunity and engage yourself yourselves in the service of the Lord with much enthusiasm and make your life sublime.
