SUMMARY:Kamika Ekadashi 9th Aug 2026
DESCRIPTION:The saintly king Yudhisthira maharaj said\, “Oh Supreme Lord\, I have heard from You the glories of fasting on Deva-sayani Ekadashi\, which occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Ashadha. Now I would like to hear from You the glories of the Ekadashi that occurs during the dark fortnight (krishna paksha) of the month of Shravana (July – August). Oh Govindadeva\, please be merciful to me and explain its glories. Oh Supreme Vasudeva\, I offer my most humble obeisances unto You.” \nThe Supreme Lord\, Shri Krishna\, replied\, “Oh King\, please listen attentively as I describe the auspicious influence of this Holy fast (vrata) day\, which removes all sins. Narada Muni once asked Lord Brahma about this same topic. ‘Oh regent of all beings\,’ said Naradji\, ‘Oh you who sit upon a water born lotus throne\, please tell me the names of the Ekadashi that occurs during the dark fortnight of the sacred month of Shravana. Please also tell me which Deity is to be worshipped on that Holy day\, the process one must follow to observe it\, and the merit it awards.’ \n“Lord Brahma replied\, ‘My dear son Narada\, for the benefit of all humanity I shall happily tell you everything you wish to know\, for just hearing the glories of the Kamika Ekadashi bestows merit equal to that obtained by one who performs a horse sacrifice. Certainly\, great merit is attained by one who worships\, and who also meditates on the lotus feet of the four-armed Lord Gadadhara\, who holds conchshell\, disc\, club and lotus in His hands and who is also known as Shridhara\, Hari\, Vishnu\, Madhava\, and MadhusUdana. And the blessings achieved by such a person / devotee\, who worships Lord Vishnu exclusively are far greater than those achieved by one who takes a sacred bath in the Ganges at Kashi (Varanasi)\, in the forest of NaimishAraNya\, or at Pushkara\, which is the only place on the planet where I am formally worshipped. \nBut one who observes this Kamika Ekadashi and also worships Lord Shri Krishna achieves greater merit than one who has darshana of Lord KedAranAtha in the HimAlayas\, or one who bathes at Kurukshetra during a solar eclipse\, or one who donates the whole Earth in charity\, including its forests and oceans\, or one who bathes in the Gandaki River (where the sacred Shaligrams are found) or the GodAvari River on a full moon (purnima) day that falls on a Monday when Leo (Simha) and Jupiter (Guru) are conjoined (conjunct). \n“Observing Kamika Ekadashi bestows the same merit as donating a milk-cow and her auspicious calf\, along with their feed. On this all auspicious day\, whosoever worships Lord Sri Shridhara-deva\, Vishnu\, is glorified by all the devas\, Gandharvas\, Pannagas\, and NAgas. \n“Those who are afraid of their past sins and completely immersed in sinful materialistic life should at least observe this best of Ekadashis according to their ability and thus attain liberation. This Ekadashi is the purest of all days and the most powerful for removing sins of the native. Oh Narada ji\, Lord Shri Hari Himself once said about this Ekadashi\, “One who fasts on Kamika Ekadashi attains much more merit than one who studies all the spiritual literatures.” \n“Anyone who fasts on this particular day remains awake throughout the night will never experience the anger of Yamaraja\, the king of death personified. It has been seen that whoever observes Kamika Ekadashi will not have to suffer future births\, and in the past too\, many Yogis of devotion who fasted on this day went to the spiritual world. One should therefore follow in their auspicious footsteps and strictly observe a fast on this most auspicious of Ekadashis. \n“Whosoever worships Lord Shri Hari with Tulasi leaves is freed from all implication of sin. Indeed\, he lives untouched by sin\, as the lotus leaf\, although in the water\, is untouched by it. Whosoever offers Lord Shri Hari but a single leaf from the sacred Tulasi tree (occillium basilcum sanctum) attains as much merit as one who gives away in charity two hundred grams of gold and eight hundred grams of silver. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is more pleased by one who offers Him a single Tulasi leaf than by one who worships Him with pearls\, rubies\, topaz\, diamonds\, lapis lazuli\, sapphires\, gomedA stones (gomaz)\, cat’s eye gems\, and coral. \nOne who offers Lord Keshava newly grown maNjari buds from the Tulasi plant gets rid of all the sins he has committed during this or any other lifetime. Indeed\, mere darshana of Tulasi on Kamika Ekadashi removes all sins\, and merely touching her and praying to her removes all kinds of disease. One who waters Tulasi devi need never fear the Lord of death\, Yamaraja. One who plants or transplants Tulasi on this days will eventually reside with Lord Shri Krishna in His own abode. To Srimati Tulasi devi\, who awards liberation in devotional service\, one should therefore daily offer one’s full obeisances. \n“Even Chitragupta\, Yamaraja’s secretary\, cannot calculate the merit obtained by one who offers Shrimati Tulasi-devi a perpetually burning ghee lamp. So dear is this sacred Ekadashi to the Supreme Personality of Godhead that all the forefathers of one who offers a bright ghee lamp to Lord Shri Krishna on this day ascend to the heavenly planets and drink the celestial nectar there. Whoever offers a ghee or sesame oil lamp to Shri Krishna on this day is freed from all his sins and enters the abode of Surya\, the Sun-god\, with a body as bright as ten million lamps. This Ekadashi is so powerful that if one who is unable to fast simply follows the practices as mentioned herein\, s/he is elevated to the heavenly planets\, along with all their forefathers. \n“Oh Maharaj Yudhisthira\,” Lord Shri Krishna concluded\, “…these were the words of prajapathi Brahma to his son Narada Muni concerning the incalculable glories of this Kamika Ekadashi\, which removes all sins. This sacred day nullifies even the sin of killing a Brahmana or the sin of killing an unborn child in the womb\, and it promotes one to the spiritual world by making one supremely meritorious.\nOne who kills the innocent\, i.e.\, a brahmin (Brahmana)\, a child in the womb\, a pious and spotless woman\, etc.\, and then later hears about the glories of Kamika Ekadashi will be relieved of the reaction to one’s sins. However\, one should NOT think beforehand that one can kill a Brahmin or other innocent folk and then go unpunished simply by hearing of this Ekadashi. Such knowing commission of sin is an abomination. \nWhosoever hears these glories of the Kamika Ekadashi with faith becomes free of all sins and returns home\, back to Godhead – Vishnu-loka\, Vaikuntha. \nThus ends the narration of the glories of the Shravana-krshna Ekadashi\, or Kamika Ekadashi\,\nfrom the Brahma-Vaivarta Purana.

SUMMARY:Pavitropana Ekadashi 23rd Aug 2026
DESCRIPTION:Shri Yudhisthira Maharaja said\, “Oh Madhusudana\, Oh killer of the Madhu demon\, please be merciful to me and describe to me the Ekadashi that occurs during the light fortnight of the month of Shravana (July-August).” The Supreme Lord\, Sri Krishna\, replied\, “Yes\, Oh king\, I shall happily narrate its glories to you\, for just by hearing about this sacred Ekadashi one attains the merit of performing a horse sacrifice. \n“At the dawn of Dvarpara-yuga there lived a king by the name of Mahijita\, who ruled the kingdom of Mahismati-puri. Because he had no son\, his entire kingdom seemed utterly cheerless to him. A married man who has no son gains no happiness in this life or the next. \nThe Sanskrit word for ‘son’ is putra. Pu is the name of a particular hell\, and tra means ‘to deliver.’ Thus the word putra means ‘a person who delivers one from the hell named Pu.’ Therefore every married man should produce at least one son and train him properly; then the father will be delivered from a hellish condition of life. But this injunction does not apply to the serious devotees of Lord Vishnu or Krishna\, for the Lord becomes their son\, father\, and mother. \nFurthermore\, Chanakya Pandita says\, \nsatyam mata pita jnanam\ndharmo bhrata daya sakha\nsantih patni ksama putrah\nsadete mama vandhavah \n“The truth is my mother\, knowledge is my father\, my occupational duty is my brother\, kindness is my friend\, tranquillity is my wife\, and forgiveness is my son. These six are my family members.” Among the twenty-six leading qualities of a devotee of the Lord\, forgiveness is the topmost. Therefore devotees should make an extra endeavour to develop this quality. Here Chanakya says “forgiveness is my son\,” and thus a devotee of the Lord\, even though he may be on the path of renunciation\, may observe Putrada Ekadashi and pray to attain this kind of “son.” \nFor a long time this king tried very hard to obtain an heir\, but to no avail. Seeing his years advancing ever onwards\, King Mahijita became increasingly anxious. One day he told an assembly of his advisers: ‘I have committed no sin in this life\, and there is no ill-gotten wealth in my treasury. I have never usurped the offerings to the demigods or brahmanas. When I waged war and conquered kingdoms\, I followed the rules and regulations of the military art\, and I have protected my subjects as if they were my own children. I punished even my own relatives if they broke the law\, and if my enemy was gentle and religious I welcomed him. Oh twice-born souls\, although I am a religious and faithful follower of the Vedik standards\, still my home is without a son. Kindly tell me the reason for this.’ \n“Hearing this\, the king’s brahmana advisers discussed the subject among themselves\, and with the aim of benefiting the king they visited the various ashrams of the great sages. At last they came upon a sage who was austere\, pure\, and self-satisfied\, and who was strictly observing a vow of fasting. His senses were completely under control\, he had conquered his anger\, and he was expert at performing his occupational duty. Indeed\, this great sage was expert in all the conclusions of the Vedas\, and he had extended his life span to that of Lord Brahma himself. His name was Lomasa Rishi\, and he knew part\, present\, and future. After each kalpa passed\, one hair would fall out of his body ( One kalpa\, or twelve hours of Lord Brahma\, equals 4\,320\,000\,000 years.) All the king’s brahmana advisers very happily approached him one by one to offer their humble respects. \n“Captivated by this great soul\, King Mahijita’s advisers offered obeisances to him and said very respectfully\, ‘Only because of our great good fortune\, Oh sage\, have we been allowed to see you.’\n“Lomasa Rishi saw them bowing down to him and replied\, ‘Kindly let me know why you have come here. Why are you praising me? I must do all I can to solve your problems\, for sages like me have only one interest: to help others. Do not doubt this.’ \nLomasa Rishi had all good qualities because he was a devotee of the Lord. As stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam (5:18:12)\, \nyasyasti bhaktir bhagavaty akinchana\nsarvair gunais tatra samasate surah\nharav abhaktasya kuto mahad-guna\nmanorathenasati dhavato bahih \n“In one who has unflinching devotional service to Krishna\, all the good qualities of Krishna and the demigods are consistently manifest. However\, he who has no devotion to the Supreme Personality of Godhead has no good qualifications because he is engaged by mental concoction in material existence\, which is the external feature of the Lord.” \n“The king’s representatives said\, ‘We have come to you\, Oh exalted sage\, to ask for your help in solving a very serious problem. Oh sage\, you are like Lord Brahma. Indeed\, there is no better sage in the entire world. Our king\, Mahijita\, is without a son\, though he has sustained and protected us as if we were his sons. Seeing him so unhappy on account of being sonless\, we have become very sad\, Oh sage\, and therefore we have entered the forest to perform severe austerities. By our good fortune we happened upon you. Everyone’s desires and activities become successful just by your darshana. Thus we humble ask that you tell us how our kind king can obtain a son.’ \n“Hearing their sincere plea\, Lomasa Rishi absorbed himself in deep meditation for a moment and at once understood the king’s previous life. Then he said\, ‘Your ruler was a merchant in his past life\, and feeling his wealth insufficient\, he committed sinful deeds. He traveled to many villages to trade his goods. Once\, at noon on the day after the Ekadashi that comes during the light fortnight of the month of Jyeshtha (Trivikrama – May-June)\, he became thirsty while traveling from place to place. He came upon a beautiful pond on the outskirts of a village\, but just as he was about to drink at the pond a cow arrived there with her new-born calf. These two creatures were also very thirsty because of the heat\, but when the cow and calf started to drink\, the merchant rudely shoved them aside and selfishly slaked his own thirst. This offense against a cow and her calf has resulted in your king’s being without a son now. But the good deeds he performed in his previous life have given him rulership over an undisturbed kingdom.’ \n“Hearing this\, the king’s advisers replied\, ‘Oh renowned rishi\, we have heard that the Vedas say one can nullify the effects of one’s past sins by acquiring merit. Be so kind as to give us some instruction by which our king’s sins can be destroyed; please give him your mercy so that a prince will take birth in his family.’ \n“Lomasa Rishi said\, ‘There is an Ekadashi called Putrada\, which comes during the light fortnight of the month of Shravana. On this day all of you\, including your king\, should fast and stay awake all night\, strictly following the rules and regulations. Then you should give the king whatever merit you gain by this fast. If you follow these instructions of mine\, he will surely be blessed with a fine son.’ \n“All the king’s advisers became very pleased to hear these words from Lomasa Rishi\, and they all offered him their grateful obeisances. Then\, their eyes bright with happiness\, they returned home. \n“When the month of Shravana arrived\, the king’s advisers remembered the advice of Lomasa Rishi\, and under their direction all the citizens of Mahismati-puri\, as well as the king\, fasted on Ekadashi. And on the next day\, DvAdasi\, the citizens dutifully offered their accrued merit to him. By the strength of all this merit\, the queen became pregnant and eventually gave birth to a most beautiful son. \n“O Yudhisthira\,” Lord Krishna concluded\, “the Ekadashi that comes during the light fortnight of the month of Shravana has thus rightfully become famous as Putrada [“bestower of a son”]. Whoever desires happiness in this world and the next should certainly fast from all grains and legumes on this holy day. Indeed\, whoever simply hears the glories of Putrada Ekadashi becomes completely free of all sins\, is blessed with a good son\, and surely ascends to heaven after death.” \nThus ends the narration of the glories of Shravana-sukla Ekadashi\, or Putrada Ekadashi\, from the Bhavishya Purana.

SUMMARY:Radha Govinda Jhulan Yatra Begins 23rd Aug 2026
DESCRIPTION:The swing festival of Radha-Krsna. The Deities ride on an elaborately decorated swing. \nDeities in the temples are swung on a swing. Some of the main temples that this festival is celebrated at are the Banke Bihari Temple and the Radha-Raman Temple in Vrindavana\, the Dwarkadish temple in Mathura\, and the Larily Lal Temple in Varsana. \nIn our Iskcon temples we observe for five days in accordance with Srila Prabhupada’s instructions. So whether one observes for the four days or for the seven\, or thirteen days\, the same festival is put on for the pleasure of the Lord and His loving associates. \nThis is a wonderful ceremonial function of Lord Krishna’s pastimes that reflects practically how we are to render service to the Lord for His pleasure. \nAt the time of the Jhulan Yatra festival it is Monsoon in India and the air is thick\, heavy and humid with the heat and the rains. In the midst of the rainy season\, when fields and jungle have turned shades of lush green and flowers are blossoming all around\, the festival of Hariyali Teej is celebrated. \nThese festivals are not in any way mere rituals\, as they all have practical service functionality to invoke loving servitude of the devotees for the Lord. Lord Sri Krishna is the Supreme enjoyer and doesn’t have to work hard like us in this world. Everything He does is pleasurable\, and He organises many situation in which He can incorporate us\, His separated parts and parcels into His loving service which is our natural condition in the spiritual realm. \nWhen Sri Krishna had his pastimes in rural Vrindavan with His cowherd friends together they lovingly tended the cows\, and wandered in the pastures playing\, frolicking\, and feasting. Throughout the various seasons they all continuously enjoyed being part of Sri Krishna’s pastimes\, and rendering loving service to Him as best they could. \nOver the past few months as the climate had changed from Vasant Panchami (Spring festival) where everyone dresses in yellow and goes to the fields\, performs fertility rites\, and plants new crops\, etc.) to Dola Purnima where scented powders and flowers are thrown on the body of the Lord playfully\, and singing and dancing goes on for His pleasure. Similarly all the other different festivals were observed where the friends of Lord Krishna would look after His express comforts or pleasure\, go to the forest with Him\, serve Him and have fun. \nAs the temperature rises toward Summer the Chandan Yatra is performed where from the Akshaya Tritiya for a period of 21 days the body of the Lord is anointed with scented sandalwood mixed with camphor\, musk\, saffron. As the sandalwood is applied to the body it immediately cools\, but then there is a natural cycle that also follows with the heat naturally there is some perspiration\, and as the perspiration again mixes with the sandalwood it is dried and cooled by even the slightest breeze creating a pleasant feeling like being covered with Talcum powder. \nHowever\, as the temperature increases just to be anointed with something cooling is not enough therefore on (or from for some sampradayas or temples) the Snan Purnima in the month of Jyestha (Trivikram Vaishnava mase) there is the ceremonial bathing of the Lord called Snan Yatra. Although it has become especially festive in Jagannath Puri the actual event originates in Vrindavana with the devotees bathing Krishna\, and Balaram for their pleasure and then taking bath themselves too. Actually at this time there is no other solace than to bathe in some kind of pleasing water. All the temples of Vrindavan follow this festival\, and many devotees follow a trail of pilgrimage from one temple to the next from early morning to late evening when the temperature lowers to about 35-40 degrees centigrade absorbed in the Snan rasa. \nThe next major interactive event is Rathyatra where the devotees symbolically bring Lord Krishna (Jagannath) His brother Balaram and Subhadra maharani on high chariots\, with beautiful flapping canopies\, back to rural Vrindavan after their spell in Kurukshetra. \nAfter this comes the Jhulan Yatra festival. Starting on the ekadasi of waxing moon of Sridhara month\, many temples in Vrndavana celebrate Krsna’s swing festival\, some for one day\, others for more days. Traditionally many of the Deities of the Lord wears various clothing with green in it over this period until the Balaram Purnima. Again it is a practical festive service that the devotees provide for the Lord. Monsoon is so humid\, and the temperature is still so hot despite the cooling rains. With so much water coming from the sky\, on the ground\, and just about everywhere the last thing that anyone wants is more water to cool off. The opulence at this time is to find a breeze\, as the air is heavy with the humidity of the rains. So the devotees arrange for the pleasure and satisfaction of Krishna\, Balaram\, and Srimati Radhika by placing them on a swing (Jhulan) and creating their own breeze from the motion. \nIt is a most pleasing and satisfying festival\, with the swings often highly decorated with forest creepers\, Jasmine (Malati) that has newly blossomed in the season\, and streamers of garlands. Sometimes they use a fine spray of rose water and direct it toward the Divine couple of Radha and Krishna on Their swing. \nToday in Iskcon temples all over the world by the mercy of his Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad all the devotees and the congregational members get the opportunity to come forward after purifying their hands and remember these loving interactions of Sri Krishna with His devotees\, and also assist in the direct personal service of the Lord by applying themselves to pushing the swing. \nOn the last day of the Jhulan\, on the Purnima (full moon) this comes Lord Balaram’s appearance day festival. \nJhulan references:\n“Regarding Jhulanayatra Ceremony\, during these five days the Deities’ clothing should be changed everyday\, and there should be nice Prasadam distribution and Sankirtana as far as possible. If you are able to do it\, a nice throne may be constructed on which the Deities can be placed. This throne may be swung gently during Kirtana. That will be very good\, and surely the Deities will enjoy the function.” (A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.1st August. 1969. Letter to Jayapataka Swami. Letters book pg. 977.) \n“So we have to practice this Krsna consciousness. Here\, in this material world\, we have to work. Without work\, you cannot maintain even your family\, your body. That is not possible. Sarira-yatrapi te na prasiddhyed akarmana-. Krsna says (to) Arjuna that without karma you cannot maintain even your body. So you have to work. Sarira-yatrapi te na prasiddhyed akarmana-. And this material world means you have to maintain by working. And spiritual world means na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate. There is nothing to work\, as Krsna has nothing to work. He is simply enjoying What is called? Swing. So Krsna is enjoying\, and Krsna’s associates are enjoying. They have nothing to work. That is spiritual world. Cintamani prakara sadmasu kalpa vrksa: that is a different world. There is no material body. Therefore there is no need of the material body. That is a different world. But in this material world we have to work. Trt’ya-karma-samj \n“Radha and Krsna may be swung in this way\, but you may avoid swinging Lord Jagannatha like that.”(A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. 5th Jan. 1973. Letter to Jagdish. Letters book p.2220.) \nA pastime of Srimati Radharani and Sri Krishna’s:\nAs stated Jhulan-yatra is very dear to Krsna\, He likes it very much\, now from another perspective you will see why !!!. From a cultural perspective in India during this period\, all daughters go to their father’s house to stay there for some days and enjoy the swing festival – a custom celebrated even up to this day. \nEvery year Srimati Radharani used to go to Varshana to her parents’ house and have a very nice time there with her Gopi friends and Krsna\, whom She could freely meet (because Jotila and Kotila were not around). \n‘One time Radharani was waiting for her brother Sridam to come and take her to her fathers’ house. She was waiting\, waiting\, and waiting\, but there was no sign of Sridam and She became so sad. One day a person from Varsana was there. She asked the man to ask her father\, “Why have they have forgotten Me?” She then started to cry bitterly. The person went to Varshana and told Vrsabhanu Maharaja about the condition of his daughter. Hearing this news\, Vrishabhanu Maharaja immediately sent Sridam to Varshana to get Radharani. \nSrimati Radharani’s Mother Kirtida packed many presents for Jotila to send with Sridam\, knowing that if she did not do this\, Jotila\, being harsh of character sometimes would not send Srimati Radharani to Varshana. \nMeanwhile\, day and night Srimati Radharani was staring at the road coming from Varshana. One day\, She saw Sridam and when he finally arrived at the front gate they embraced each other. She was weeping\, “Oh brother you had forgotten Me?; My father and mother too?; Everyone forgot Me?” \nAt first Jotila refused to let Srimati Radharani go. “No no\, She cannot go. She has so much work to do here\, and there is so much danger there because of that black boy. She cannot go.” \nThen Sridam gave Jotila all the presents given by Kirtida ma. Seeing this\, she said\, “Alright\, she can go\, but only for a few days.” \n“Then Srimati Radharani and Sridam went on a cart pulled by four bullocks to Varshana. Seeing the palace of her parents on the hilltop\, feeling great happiness Radharani started weeping and even more weeping when She saw Her father and mother face to face.\nAt that time Jhulan-yatra had already started and Srimati Radharani started swinging with Her sakhis (friends) during periods in the day and night\, but She was not satisfied alone\, without Krsna there. Knowing this\, Krsna sometimes came in disguise to the palace. Sometimes He dressed as a Gopi selling bangles or beautiful garlands. Or He appeared in any other form and made an appointment for Them to meet each other somewhere in a very secret place in the forest. \nOnce\, Srimati Radharani was seated on the Jhulan and Krsna was pushing the swing very gently. Suddenly Krsna put so much force in pushing the swing that Srimati Radharani became fearful and started crying out\, “O Krsna\, save Me\, save Me!” That transcendental trickster Sri Krsna climbed on the swing and She firmly embraced Him\, giving Him so much pleasure. Why so much pleasure? Because normally He has to do so many tricks so that Radharani will embrace Him\, but in this instance She embraced Him out of Her own will\, without much effort on His part. Therefore He is so fond of these swing pastimes. \nSome meditations on Sri Jhulan Yatra in Sri Vrindavan Dham. \nThe Jhulan time is very intense. In general the Shravana masha have an exceptional mood\, it is raining all the time\, Yamuna Mayi became very wide\, flooded and there is a fresh atmosphere for devotees who move daily to whorship and take the lila-darshan which is performed in diverse temples in Vrindavan. As an example\, in Jai Sing Geera\, the lilas are performed during the whole week: every morning Gauranga-lila and at the evening Krishna-lila’s theatre is played. \nDevotees tell that some time ago a king\, who was a great devotee of Sri Radha-Raman used to came to Vrindavan in the Shravana month to assist that performances which started out of his own desire. The rasa-lilas and theatre performance of Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu and Sri Krishna lilas was very dear to him and surely to Sri Radha Krishna also because since that time it now takes place as a yearly event. \nIn each of Vrindavans’ temples a wonderful swing-kunja is to be found\, each with singular features along with the swinging mood and the always happy “Jay Sri Radhe! Jay Sri Radhe!”. There took place also the golden swing darshan of Sri Banka Bihari ji\, which occurs once yearly. It happen the first day of Jhulan in which streets are completely crowded\, any vehicles\, like cars\, even Auto-rickshaws transit is very much restricted and Rikshaws can move only in the main roads. Some devotees wait until the midnight special aratis to get darshan because during the day it’s just ridiculous to try and get in with the hundreds of thousands of villages who descend on Vrindavan township to be absorbed in this wonderful festival. \nThere’s a good business made by devotees engaged in making the huge amounts of garlands that are used in all the temples\, by all the devotees wanting to offer garlands\, and to decorate the temples and Jhulan(s) during the whole week. It’s a perfect example how everyone benefits\, both economically – financially\, socially\, spiritually etc.\, simply by rendering some simple service for the pleasure of the Lord. Vast amounts of prasadam is cooked and offered to the Deities\, and sold for a small donation; the hotles\, dharmshallas\, guest-houses etc\, Rickshaws\, taxis\, everyone\, all are happy and satisfied knowing that simply by serving the Lord\, the root of everything all their needs will be taken care of.

SUMMARY:Jhulan Yatra Ends 28th Aug 2026
SUMMARY:Appearance Day of Lord Balarama 28th Mar 2026
DESCRIPTION:Lord Balarama is the first personal expansion of Lord Krsna\, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. All other incarnations expand from Him. In Lord Krsna’s pastimes\, He plays as Krsna’s older brother. Together Krsna and Balarama enact many pastimes as cowherd boys in the land of Vrndavana. \nWho is Lord Balarama?\nThe Supreme Personality of Godhead\, Krishna\, is the fountainhead of all incarnations. Lord Balarama is His second body. They are both one and the same identity. They differ only in form. Balarama is the first bodily expansion of Krishna\, and He assists in Lord Krishna’s transcendental pastimes. He is the source of the entire spiritual world and is the adi-guru\, the original spiritual master. \nHe assumes five other forms to serve Lord Krishna. He Himself helps in the pastimes of Lord Krishna\, and He does the work of creation in four other forms called the catur-vyuha (four armed) forms known as Vasudeva\, Sankarshana\, Pradyumna and Anirudha. He executes the orders of Lord Krishna in the work of creation\, and in the form of Lord Sesa He serves Sri Krishna in various ways. In all the forms He tastes the transcendental bliss of serving Krishna. No one can approach Krishna without first getting the mercy of Baladeva. \nDescent of Balarama\nWhenever Krishna appears in the material world\, He is accompanied by His associates and paraphernalia. Five thousand years ago when Krishna descended into the material world\, He was first preceded by Baladeva. Only after Baladeva give His mercy did Krishna descend\, such is the intimate relationship between Krishna and Baladeva. \nWhen Baladeva appeared as the seventh child in the womb of Devaki\, she could understand that this was a divine child and this made her all the more concerned about His safety. Even Kamsa could sense His potency and he became fearful\, thinking he may have been tricked by the prophecy that he will be slain only by the eight child of Devaki. At this time Krishna instructed Yogamaya\, His internal potency\, to transfer the unborn child from the womb of Devaki to that of Rohini\, one of the other wives of Vasudeva\, who was hiding from Kamsa in the house of Nanda Maharaja in Gokul. \nIn this way Balarama was born in Gokul under the protection of Nanda Maharaja. Garga Muni the venerable kulguru (family priest) of the Yadu dynasty revealed to Rohini that the child she was carrying was indeed that of her husband Vasudeva. At the time of the name-giving ceremony he named the child Rama\, one who gives all pleasures. Referring to the immense strength of the child\, Garga Muni predicted that He will also be known as Balarama (bala meaning strength). Since He was forcibly attracted from the womb of Devaki to that of Rohini\, He was also be called Sankarshana. As the son of Rohini He was known as Rohini-nandan and as the elder brother of Krishna He was also called Douji. \nThe form of Lord Balarama\nPowerful Lord Balarama is sixteen years old\, full of the luster of youth and has a fair complexion the color of crystal. He wears blue garments and a garland of forest flowers. His handsome hair is tied in a graceful topknot. Splendid earrings adorn His ears and His neck is splendidly decorated with garlands of flowers and strings of jewels. Splendid armlets and bracelets ornament Douji’s graceful and very strong arms and His feet are decorated with splendid jeweled anklets. \nLord Balarama’s beauty is enhanced by the earrings touching His cheeks. His face is decorated with tilaka made from musk\, and His broad chest is ornamented with a garland of gunja. Balarama’s voice is very grave and His arms are very long\, touching His thighs \nThe splendor of Lord Balarama’s transcendental form eclipses many millions of glistening rising moons\, and the slightest scent of His boundless strength is sufficient to destroy many armies of demons. Although He knows the supernatural power of His younger brother\, Krishna\, still\, out of love for Him\, He never leaves Krishna alone in the forest even for a moment. Balarama is Sri Krishna’s dearest friend and is a great reservoir of the nectar mellows of many kinds of transcendental pastimes. \nSpecific Pastimes of Lord Balarama\nBalarama slays Dhenukasura\nDhenukasura was a powerful demon who had assumed the form of an ass. With his demon friends he was occupying Talavana\, one of the twelve forests of Vrindavana. Out of fear of these demons no one could approach Talavana and enjoy the numerous flowers and fruits in the forest. Balarama\, induced by His cowherd friends\, entered the forest desiring to kill the demons. He began shaking the fruit trees\, making a big noise. Dhenuka\, furious at the intrusion\, attacked Balarama with his rear legs\, but Balarama easily picked him up by his legs and whirled him around until he died. As the other demon friends of Dhenuka rushed to attack\, Krishna and Balarama picked them up and threw them on trees\, killing them. Soon the forest was free of all demons\, and it appeared that the bent trees were being directed by Balarama to pay obeisances to Krishna. \nBalarama kills Pralambasura\nOnce when Krishna and Balarama were playing with the cowherd boys\, a demon named Pralamba entered their midst\, disguised as a cowherd boy. Understanding the invincible potency of Krishna\, he instead decided to abduct Balarama. At the end of the game\, as the losing party he was supposed to carry Balarama on his shoulders. Carrying the Lord on his shoulders he ran swiftly\, but Balarama realizing the true identity of demon began to make himself heavier and heavier. Unable to bear the weight\, the demon assumed his original form which was like a huge dark effulgent cloud\, decorated with golden ornaments. Balarama then bought His fist down the head of the demon splitting it into two and causing him to give up his life. \nBalarama glorified by Krishna\nAs the elder brother of Krishna\, Balarama was the object of His love and respect. Once when walking in the forest of Vrindavana\, Krishna observed the trees bending down as if paying obeisances. He glorified the lotus feet of Balarama as being the object of devotion even for the demigods. He said that the trees\, which were impersonalists in previous life times\, witnessing the personal form of Balarama were now praying for His devotion. At other times when Balarama would get tired by playing\, He would lie down the lap of one of the cowherd boys and Krishna would personally massage His feet\, fan Him and give Him service. Such was the sweet reciprocation of love between Krishna and Balarama. \nYamuna devi chastised\nOnce Lord Balarama\, Who was at the time living in Dwarka\, came back to stay in Vrindavana for two months. At this time He enjoyed pastimes with His gopi friends (who were different from the gopis of Krishna). Enjoying such pastimes on the bank of Yamuna at Rama-ghata\, the Lord summoned Yamuna so that He could sport in the waters. When Yamuna devi did not respond. Lord Balarama took up His favorite weapon\, His plow\, and began to drag Yamuna in a hundred streams. Understanding the position of Balarama\, Yamuna devi personally appeared and offered her obeisances to the Lord with many prayers in His glorification. Thus appeased the Lord entered and bathed in the waters of the river. \nKauravas chastised\nSamba\, the darling son of Jambavati and Krishna\, kidnapped Laksmana the daughter of Duryodhana from the assembly were she was supposed to choose her husband. The furious Kauravas after a prolonged fight\, finally arrested Samba by sending in six of their greatest warriors. When the Yadavas heard of this they prepared for battle but Lord Balarama pacified them\, preferring to find a peaceful solution. However when He requested the Kauravas to return Samba and Laksmana\, the Kauravas responded by insulting Him and the Yadava dynasty. Understanding them to be ignorant in their false prestige\, Balarama took His plow and began to drag Hastinapura into the Ganges. The terrified Kauravas now surrendered to the lotus feet of Balarama\, begging for His mercy. They immediately returned Samba and Laksmana and had them married ceremoniously with many opulent gifts. \nBalarama marries Revati\nIn Satya yuga there was a King named Raivata whose daughter Revati was excellent in all respects. Unable to find a match suitable for her\, the king took her to the court of Brahma for his advise. After waiting for some time when the king met with Brahma\, he was shocked to learn that in the short time he spent in the Brahmaloka\, millions of years had already passed on Earth and at the time Dvapara yuga was concluding. However Lord Brahma informed King Raivata that present at this time was Lord Balarama Who was more than qualified to be the husband of Revati. \nKing Raivata returned and approached Balarama to accept Revati as His wife. However Revati belonged to an earlier yuga when people were much larger physically. So Lord Balarama placed His plow on her head until she shrunk to an appropriate size and accepted her as His wife. \nBalarama and Mahabharata\nIn general Balarama was equally affectionate to both the Pandavas and the Kauravas. He accepted both Duryodhana and Bhima as His disciples in the art of mace-war. As a teacher He appreciated the superior technique of Duryodhana as opposed to the raw strength of Bhima. At the time of Mahabharata\, He refused to take sides and instead went on an extended pilgrimage to the holy places. In the battle between Bhima and Duryodhana\, He became angry at Bhima for killing Duryodhana by trickery\, but was appeased by Sri Krishna. \nKilling of Romaharshana\nTowards the end of Dvapara yuga thousands of sages assembled on the banks of Naimyasharana to perform a thousand year yajna in an effort to reverse the onset of Kali yuga. They appointed as their leader Romaharshana\, one of the main disciple of Vyasadeva\, who was also present when Sukadeva Goswami narrated Srimad Bhagavatam to King Parikshit. \nWhen Lord Balarama entered the assembly\, understanding Him to be the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, all present rose to offer Him respect. However Romaharshana\, proud at occupying the position of the leader did not get up. Lord Balarama could understand that even though Romaharshana was a an expert Vedantist\, he had not yet realized these teachings. Considering him unqualified to lead the ceremony\, Balarama touched him with a blade of grass causing him to die. He then instituted Suta\, the son of Romaharshana as the leader of the assembly and continued with His pilgrimage. \nMercy of Lord Balarama\nLord Balarama exemplifies the service attitude to Krishna. His only mission is to please Krishna by rendering service to Him\, whether it is in the creation of the material worlds\, maintaining the spiritual world or as His personal paraphernalia. \nLord Balarama is the eternal companion of Sri Krishna. He came as Lakshmana with Rama and later as Nityananda Prabhu with Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He is the original spiritual master\, and any one desiring to make spiritual progress must first get the mercy of Lord Balarama.

DESCRIPTION:Second month: No yoghurt (if one requires it for health\, it can be mixed with water) \nCaturmasya stands for ‘four months’. It is the period between sayana and uttana ekadasis. The scriptures refer to this period as the duration of Lord Visnu’s sleep in this universe. \nThe main goal of observing Caturmasya is to decrease attachment to material things and to increase devotion to Krishna. \nSrila Prabhupada writes in Caitanya Caritamrta\, “Caturmasya should be observed by all sections of the population. It does not matter whether one is a grihasta or a sanyasi. The observation is obligatory to all ashramas.” He further explains how to observe the vow: “This is not very difficult. In the month of Sravana one should not eat spinach (green leafy vegetables of the nature)\, in the month of Bhadra one should not eat yogurt (yogurt used as binding agent for cake is allowed)\, and in the month of Asvina one should not drink milk (milk sweets\, milk by-products are fine). \nOne should not eat fish or other non-vegetarian food during the month of Kartik. Masura dal and urad dal being high in protein is also considered non-vegetarian.” Thus during caturmasya one should practice to give up all food intended for sense enjoyment. However\, maha-prasad\, though containing restricted item can be honoured! \nIt is stated in Hari Bhakti Vilasa 15/113 that ‘after properly praying to the Supreme Lord near Him\, one should properly take a vow to follow the proper rules and regulations and process of caturmasya to increase one’s devotion to Lord Sri Krishna.’ \nSo please take this opportunity and engage yourself yourselves in the service of the Lord with much enthusiasm and make your life sublime.

SUMMARY:Sri Krsna Janmastami 4th Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:The appearance anniversary of Lord Sri Krsna\, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. \nSri Krsna Janmastami \nCHAPTER ONE \nThe Advent of Lord Krishna Once the world was overburdened by the unnecessary defense force of different kings\, who were actually demons\, but were posing themselves as the royal order. At that time\, the whole world became perturbed\, and the predominating deity of this earth\, known as Bhumi\, went to see Lord Brahma to tell of her calamities due to the demoniac kings. Bhumi assumed the shape of a cow and presented herself before Lord Brahma with tears in her eyes. She was bereaved and was weeping just to invoke the lord’s compassion. She related the calamitous position of the earth\, and after hearing this\, Lord Brahma became much aggrieved\, and he at once started for the ocean of milk\, where Lord Visnu resides. Lord Brahma was accompanied by all the demigods headed by Lord Siva\, and Bhumi also followed. Arriving on the shore of the milk ocean\, Lord Brahma began to pacify the Lord Visnu who formerly saved the earthly planet by assuming the transcendental form of a boar. \nIn the Vedic mantras\, there is a particular type of prayer called Purusa-sukta. Generally\, the demigods offer their obeisances unto Visnu\, the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, by chanting the Purusa-sukta. It is understood herein that the predominating deity of every planet can see the supreme lord of this universe\, Brahma\, whenever there is some disturbance in his planet. And Brahma can approach the Supreme Lord Visnu\, not by seeing Him directly\, but by standing on the shore of the ocean of milk. There is a planet within this universe called Svetadvipa\, and on that planet there is an ocean of milk. It is understood from various Vedic literatures that just as there is the ocean of salt water within this planet\, there are various kinds of oceans in other planets. Somewhere there is an ocean of milk\, somewhere there is an ocean of oil\, and somewhere there is an ocean of liquor and many other types of oceans. Purusa-sukta is the standard prayer which the demigods recite to appease the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, Ksirodakasayi-Visnu. Because He is lying on the ocean of milk\, He is called Ksirodakasayi-Visnu. He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, through whom all the incarnations within this universe appear. \nAfter all the demigods offered the Purusa-sukta prayer to the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, they apparently heard no response. Then Lord Brahma personally sat in meditation\, and there was a message-transmission from Lord Visnu to Brahma. Brahma then broadcast the message to the demigods. That is the system of receiving Vedic knowledge. The Vedic knowledge is received first by Brahma from the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, through the medium of the heart. As stated in the beginning of Srimad-Bhagavatam\, tene brahma hrda: the transcendental knowledge of the Vedas was transmitted to Lord Brahma through the heart. Here also\, in the same way\, only Brahma could understand the message transmitted by Lord Visnu\, and he broadcast it to the demigods for their immediate action. The message was: The Supreme Personality of Godhead will appear on the earth very soon along with His supreme powerful potencies\, and as long as He remains on the earth planet to execute His mission of annihilating the demons and establishing the devotees\, the demigods should also remain there to assist Him. They should all immediately take birth in the family of the Yadu dynasty\, wherein the Lord will also appear in due course of time. \nThe Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself\, Krsna\, personally appeared as the son of Vasudeva. Before He appeared\, all the demigods\, along with their wives\, appeared in different pious families in the world just to assist the Lord in executing His mission. The exact word used here is tatpriyartham\, which means the demigods should appear on the earth in order to please the Lord. In other words\, any living entity who lives only to satisfy the Lord is a demigod. The demigods were further informed that the plenary portion of Lord Krsna\, Ananta\, who is maintaining the universal planets by extending His millions of hoods\, would also appear on earth before Lord Krsna’s appearance. They were also informed that the external potency of Visnu (maya)\, with whom all the conditioned souls are enamored\, would also appear just to execute the purpose of the Supreme Lord. \nAfter instructing and pacifying all the demigods\, as well as Bhumi\, with sweet words\, Lord Brahma\, the father of all prajapatis\, or progenitors of universal population\, departed for his own abode\, the highest material planet\, called Brahmaloka. \nThe leader of the Yadu dynasty\, King Surasena\, was ruling over the country known as Mathura (the district of Mathura)\, as well as the district known as Surasena. On account of the rule of King Surasena\, Mathura became the capital city of all the kings of the Yadus. Mathura was also made the capital of the kings of the Yadu dynasty because the Yadus were a very pious family and knew that Mathura is the place where Lord Sri Krsna lives eternally\, just as He also lives in Dvaraka. \nOnce upon a time\, Vasudeva\, the son of Surasena\, just after marrying Devaki\, was going home on his chariot with his newly wedded wife. The father of Devaki\, known as Devaka\, had contributed a sufficient dowry because he was very affectionate toward his daughter. He had contributed hundreds of chariots completely decorated with gold equipment. At that time\, Kamsa\, the son of Ugrasena\, in order to please his sister\, Devaki\, had voluntarily taken the reins of the horses of Vasudeva’s chariot and was driving. According to the custom of the Vedic civilization\, when a girl is married\, the brother takes the sister and brother-in-law to their home. Because the newly married girl may feel too much separation from her father’s family\, the brother goes with her until she reaches her father-in-law’s house. The full dowry contributed by Devaka was as follows: 400 elephants fully decorated with golden garlands\, 15\,000 decorated horses\, and 1800 chariots. He also arranged for 200 beautiful girls to follow his daughter. The ksatriya system of marriage\, still current in India\, dictates that when a ksatriya is married\, a few dozen of the bride’s young girlfriends (in addition to the bride) go to the house of the king. The followers of the queen are called maidservants\, but actually they act as friends of the queen. This practice is prevalent from time immemorial\, traceable at least to the time before the advent of Lord Krsna 5\,000 years ago. So Vasudeva brought home another 200 beautiful girls along with his wife. \nWhile the bride and bridegroom were passing along on the chariot\, there were different kinds of musical instruments playing to indicate the auspicious moment. There were conchshells\, bugles\, drums and kettledrums; combined together\, they were vibrating a nice concert. The procession was passing very pleasingly\, and Kamsa was driving the chariot\, when suddenly there was a miraculous sound vibrated from the sky which especially announced to Kamsa: “Kamsa: you are such a fool. You are driving the chariot of your sister and your brother-in-law\, but you do not know that the eighth child of this sister will kill you.” \nKamsa was the son of Ugrasena\, of the Bhoja dynasty. It is said that Kamsa was the most demoniac of all the Bhoja dynasty kings. Immediately after hearing the prophecy from the sky\, he caught hold of Devaki’s hair and was just about to kill her with his sword. Vasudeva was astonished at Kamsa’s behavior\, and in order to pacify the cruel\, shameless brother-in-law\, he began to speak as follows\, with great reason and evidence. He said\, “My dear brother-in-law Kamsa\, you are the most famous king of the Bhoja dynasty\, and people know that you are the greatest warrior and a valiant king. How is it that you are so infuriated that you are prepared to kill a woman who is your own sister at this auspicious time of her marriage? Why should you be so much afraid of death? Death is already born along with your birth. From the very day you took your birth\, you began to die. Suppose you are twenty-five years old; that means you have already died twenty-five years. Every moment\, every second\, you are dying. Why then should you be so much afraid of death? Final death is inevitable. You may die either today or in a hundred years; you cannot avoid death. Why should you be so much afraid? Actually\, death means annihilation of the present body. As soon as the present body stops functioning and mixes with the five elements of material nature\, the living entity within the body accepts another body\, according to his present action and reaction. It is just as when a man walks on the street; he puts forward his foot\, and when he is confident that his foot is situated on sound ground\, he lifts the other foot. In this way\, one after another\, the body changes and the soul transmigrates. See how the plantworms change from one twig to another so carefully! Similarly\, the living entity changes his body as soon as the higher authorities decide on his next body. As long as a living entity is conditioned within this material world\, he must take material bodies one after another. His next particular body is offered by the laws of nature\, according to the actions and reactions of this life. \n“This body is exactly like one of the bodies which we always see in dreams. During our dream of sleep\, we create so many bodies according to mental creation. We have seen gold and we have also seen a mountain\, so in a dream we can see a golden mountain by combining the two ideas. Sometimes in dreams\, we see that we have a body which is flying in the sky\, and at that time we completely forget our present body. Similarly\, these bodies are changing. When you have one body\, you forget the past body. During a dream\, we may make contact with so many new kinds of bodies\, but when we are awake we forget them all. And actually these material bodies are the creations of our mental activities. But at the present moment we do not recollect our past bodies. \n“The nature of the mind is flickering. Sometimes it accepts something\, and immediately it rejects the same thing. Accepting and rejecting is the process of the mind in contact with the five objects of sense gratification: form\, taste\, smell\, sound\, and touch. In its speculative way\, the mind comes in touch with the objects of sense gratification\, and when the living entity desires a particular type of body\, he gets it. Therefore\, the body is an offering by the laws of material nature. The living entity accepts a body and comes out again into the material world to enjoy or suffer according to the construction of the body. Unless we have a particular type of body\, we cannot enjoy or suffer according to our mental proclivities inherited from the previous life. The particular type of body is actually offered to us according to our mental condition at the time of death. \n“The luminous planets like the sun\, moon or the stars reflect themselves in different types of reservoirs\, like water\, oil or ghee. The reflection moves according to the movement of the reservoir. The reflection of the moon is on the water\, and the moving water makes the moon also appear to be moving\, but actually the moon is not moving. Similarly\, by mental concoction\, the living entity attains different kinds of bodies\, although actually he has no connection with such bodies. But on account of illusion\, being enchanted by the influence of maya\, the living entity thinks that he belongs to a particular type of body. That is the way of conditioned life. Suppose a living entity is now in a human form of body. He thinks that he belongs to the human community\, or a particular country or particular place. He identifies himself in that way and unnecessarily prepares for another body which is not required by him. Such desires and mental concoctions are the cause of different types of body. The covering influence of material nature is so strong that the living entity is satisfied in whatever body he gets\, and he identifies with that body with great pleasure. Therefore\, I beg to request you not to be overwhelmed by the dictation of your mind and body.” \nVasudeva thus requested Kamsa not to be envious of his newly married sister. One should not be envious of anyone\, because envy is the cause of fear both in this world and in the next when one is before Yamaraja (the lord of punishment after death). Vasudeva appealed to Kamsa on behalf of Devaki\, stating that she was his younger sister. He also appealed at an auspicious moment\, at the time of marriage. A younger sister or brother is supposed to be protected as one’s children. “The position is overall so delicate\,” Vasudeva reasoned\, “that if you kill her\, it will go against your high reputation.” \nVasudeva tried to pacify Kamsa by good instruction as well as by philosophical discrimination\, but Kamsa was not to be pacified because his association was demoniac. Because of his demoniac associations\, he was always a demon\, although born in a very high royal family. A demon never cares for any good instruction. He is just like a determined thief; one can give him moral instruction\, but it will not be effective. Similarly\, those who are demoniac or atheistic by nature can hardly assimilate any good instruction\, however authorized it may be. That is the difference between demigod and demon. Those who can accept good instruction and try to live their lives in that way are called demigods\, and those who are unable to take such good instruction are called demons. Failing in his attempt to pacify Kamsa\, Vasudeva wondered how he would protect his wife Devaki. When there is imminent danger\, an intelligent person should try to avoid the dangerous position as far as possible. But if\, in spite of endeavoring by all intelligence\, one fails to avoid the dangerous position\, there is no fault on his part. One should try his best to execute his duties\, but if the attempt fails\, he is not at fault. \nVasudeva thought of his wife as follows: “For the present let me save the life of Devaki\, then later on\, if there are children\, I shall see how to save them.” He further thought\, “If in the future I get a child who can kill Kamsa–just as Kamsa is thinking–then both Devaki and the child will be saved because the law of Providence is inconceivable. But now\, some way or other\, let me save the life of Devaki.” \nThere is no certainty how a living entity contacts a certain type of body\, just as there is no certainty how the blazing fire comes in contact with a certain type of wood in the forest. When there is a forest fire\, it is experienced that the blazing fire sometimes leaps over one tree and catches another by the influence of the wind. Similarly\, a living entity may be very careful and fearful in the matter of executing his duties\, but it is still very difficult for him to know what type of body he is going to get in the next life. Maharaja Bharata was very faithfully executing the duties of self-realization\, but by chance he contacted temporary affection for a deer\, and he had to accept his next life in the body of a deer. \nVasudeva\, after deliberating on how to save his wife\, began to speak to Kamsa with great respect\, although Kamsa was the most sinful man. Sometimes it happens that a most virtuous person like Vasudeva has to flatter a person like Kamsa\, a most vicious person. That is the way of all diplomatic transactions. Although Vasudeva was deeply aggrieved\, he presented himself outwardly as cheerful. He addressed the shameless Kamsa in that way because he was so atrocious. Vasudeva said to Kamsa\, “My dear brother-in-law\, please consider that you have no danger from your sister. You are awaiting some danger because you have heard a prophetic voice in the sky. But the danger is to come from the sons of your sister\, who are not present now. And who knows? There may or may not be sons in the future. Considering all this\, you are safe for the present. Nor is there cause of fear from your sister. If there are any sons born of her\, I promise that I shall present all of them to you for necessary action.” \nKamsa knew the value of Vasudeva’s word of honor\, and he was convinced by his argument. For the time being\, he desisted from the heinous killing of his sister. Thus Vasudeva was pleased and praised the decision of Kamsa. In this way\, he returned to his home. \nAfter due course of time\, Vasudeva and Devaki gave birth to eight male children\, as well as one daughter. When the first son was born\, Vasudeva kept his word of honor and immediately brought the child before Kamsa. It is said that Vasudeva was very much elevated and famous for his word of honor\, and he wanted to maintain this fame. Although it was very painful for Vasudeva to hand over the newly born child\, Kamsa was very glad to receive him. But he became a little compassionate with the behavior of Vasudeva. This event is very exemplary. For a great soul like Vasudeva\, there is nothing considered to be painful in the course of discharging one’s duty. A learned person like Vasudeva carries out his duties without hesitation. On the other hand\, a demon like Kamsa never hesitates in committing any abominable action. It is said\, therefore\, that a saintly person can tolerate all kinds of miserable conditions of life\, a learned man can discharge his duties without awaiting favorable circumstances\, a heinous person like Kamsa can act in any sinful way\, and a devotee can sacrifice everything to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead. \nKamsa became satisfied by the action of Vasudeva. He was surprised to see Vasudeva keeping his promise\, and being compassionate upon him and pleased\, he began to speak as follows: “My dear Vasudeva\, you need not present this child to me. I am not in danger from this child. I have heard that the eighth child born of you and Devaki will kill me. Why should I accept this child unnecessarily? You can take him back.” \nWhen Vasudeva was returning home with his first-born child\, although he was pleased by the behavior of Kamsa\, he could not believe in him because he knew that Kamsa was uncontrolled. An atheistic person cannot be firm in his word of honor. One who cannot control the senses cannot be steady in his determination. The great politician\, Canakya Pandita\, said\, “Never put your trust in a diplomat or in a woman.” Those who are addicted to unrestricted sense gratification can never be truthful\, nor can they be trusted with any faith. \nAt that time the great sage Narada came to Kamsa. He was informed of Kamsa’s becoming compassionate to Vasudeva and returning his first-born child. Narada was very anxious to accelerate the descent of Lord Krsna as soon as possible. He therefore informed Kamsa that personalities like Nanda Maharaja and all the cowherd men and girls and the wives of the cowherd men in Vrndavana\, and\, on the other side\, Vasudeva\, his father Surasena and all his relatives born in the family of Vrsni of the Yadu dynasty\, were preparing for the appearance of the Lord. Narada warned Kamsa to be careful of the friends and well-wishers and all the demigods taking birth in those families. Kamsa and his friends and advisors were all demons. Demons are always afraid of demigods. After being thus informed by Narada about the appearance of the demigods in different families Kamsa at once became alert. He understood that since the demigods had already appeared\, Lord Visnu must be coming soon. He at once arrested both his brother-in-law Vasudeva and Devaki and put them behind prison bars. \nWithin the prison\, shackled in iron chains\, Vasudeva and Devaki gave birth to a male child year after year\, and Kamsa\, thinking each of the babies to be the incarnation of Visnu\, killed them one after another. He was particularly afraid of the eighth child\, but after the visit of Narada\, he came to the conclusion that any child might be Krsna. Therefore it was better to kill all the babies who took birth of Devaki and Vasudeva. \nThis action of Kamsa is not very difficult to understand. There are many instances in the history of the world of persons in the royal order who have killed father\, brother\, or a whole family and friends for the satisfaction of their ambitions. There is nothing astonishing about this\, for the demoniac can kill anyone for their nefarious ambitions. \nKamsa was made aware of his previous birth by the grace of Narada. He learned that in his previous birth he was a demon of the name Kalanemi and that he was killed by Visnu. Having taken his birth in the Bhoja family\, he decided to become the deadly enemy of the Yadu dynasty; Krsna was going to take birth in that family\, and Kamsa was very much afraid that he would be killed by Krsna\, just as he was killed in his last birth. \nHe first of all imprisoned his father Ugrasena because he was the chief king among the Yadu\, Bhoja\, and Andhaka dynasties\, and he also occupied the kingdom of Surasena\, Vasudeva’s father. He declared himself the king of all such places. \nThus ends the Bhaktivedanta purport of the First Chapter of Krsna\, “Advent of Lord Krsna.” \nCHAPTER TWO\nPrayers by the Demigods for Lord Krishna in the Womb \nKing Kamsa not only occupied the kingdoms of the Yadu\, Bhoja\, and Andhaka dynasties and the kingdom of Surasena\, but he also made alliances with all the other demoniac kings\, as follows: the demon Pralamba\, demon Baka\, demon Canura\, demon Trnavarta\, demon Aghasura\, demon Mustika\, demon Arista\, demon Dvivida\, demon Putana\, demon Kesi and demon Dhenuka. At that time\, Jarasandha was the king of Magadha province (known at present as Bihar state). Thus by his diplomatic policy\, Kamsa consolidated the most powerful kingdom of his time\, under the protection of Jarasandha. He made further alliances with such kings as Banasura and Bhaumasura\, until he was the strongest. Then he began to behave most inimically towards the Yadu dynasty into which Krsna was to take His birth. \nBeing harassed by Kamsa\, the kings of the Yadu\, Bhoja and Andhaka dynasties began to take shelter in different states such as the state of the Kurus\, the state of the Pancalas and the states known as Kekaya\, Salva\, Vidarbha\, Nisadha\, Videha and Kosala. Kamsa broke the solidarity of the Yadu kingdom\, as well as the Bhoja and Andhaka. He made his position the most solid within the vast tract of land known at that time as Bharatavarsa. \nWhen Kamsa killed the six babies of Devaki and Vasudeva one after another\, many friends and relatives of Kamsa approached him and requested him to discontinue these heinous activities. But all of them became worshipers of Kamsa. \nWhen Devaki became pregnant for the seventh time\, a plenary expansion of Krsna known as Ananta appeared within her womb. Devaki was overwhelmed both with jubilation and lamentation. She was joyful\, for she could understand that Lord Visnu had taken shelter within her womb\, but at the same time she was sorry that as soon as her child would come out\, Kamsa would kill Him. At that time\, the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, Krsna\, being compassionate upon the fearful condition of the Yadus\, due to atrocities committed by Kamsa\, ordered the appearance of His Yogamaya\, or His internal potency. Krsna is the Lord of the universe\, but He is especially the Lord of the Yadu dynasty. \nThe Yogamaya is the principal potency of the Personality of Godhead. In the Vedas it is stated that the Lord\, the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, has multipotencies. Parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate. All the different potencies are acting externally and internally\, and Yogamaya is the chief of all potencies. He ordered the appearance of Yogamaya in the land of Vrajabhumi\, in Vrndavana\, which is always decorated and full with beautiful cows. In Vrndavana\, Rohini\, one of the wives of Vasudeva\, was residing at the house of King Nanda and Queen Yasoda. Not only Rohini\, but many others in the Yadu dynasty were scattered all over the country due to their fear of the atrocities of Kamsa. Some of them were even living in the caves of the mountains. \nThe Lord thus informed Yogamaya: “Under the imprisonment of Kamsa are Devaki and Vasudeva\, and at the present moment\, My plenary expansion\, Sesa\, is within the womb of Devaki. You can arrange the transfer of Sesa from the womb of Devaki to the womb of Rohini. After this arrangement\, I am personally going to appear in the womb of Devaki with My full potencies. Then I shall appear as the son of Devaki and Vasudeva. And you shall appear as the daughter of Nanda and Yasoda in Vrndavana. \n“Since you will appear as My contemporary sister\, people within the world will worship you with all kinds of valuable presentations: incense\, candles\, flowers and offerings of sacrifice. You shall quickly satisfy their desires for sense gratificiation. People who are after materialistic affection will worship you under the different forms of your expansions\, which will be named Durga\, Bhadrakali\, Vijaya\, Vaisnavi\, Kumuda\, Candika\, Krsna\, Madhavi\, Kanyaka\, Maya\, Narayani\, Isani\, Sarada and Ambika.” \nKrsna and Yogamaya appeared as brother and sister–the Supreme Powerful and the supreme power. Although there is no clear distinction between the Powerful and the power\, power is always subordinate to the Powerful. Those who are materialistic are worshipers of the power\, but those who are transcendentalists are worshipers of the Powerful. Krsna is the Supreme Powerful\, and Durga is the supreme power within the material world. Actually people in the Vedic culture worship both the Powerful and the power. There are many hundreds of thousands of temples of Visnu and Devi\, and sometimes they are worshiped simultaneously. The worshiper of the power\, Durga\, or the external energy of Krsna\, may achieve all kinds of material success very easily\, but anyone who wants to be elevated transcendentally must engage in worshiping the Powerful in Krsna consciousness. \nThe Lord also declared to Yogamaya that His plenary expansion\, Ananta Sesa\, was within the womb of Devaki. On account of being forcibly attracted to the womb of Rohini\, He will be known as Sankarsana and would be the source of all spiritual power or bala\, by which one could be able to attain the highest bliss of life which is called ramana. Therefore the plenary portion Ananta would be known after His appearance either as Sankarsana or Balarama. \nIn the Upanisads it is stated\, Nayam atma bala-hinena labhyah. The purport is that one cannot attain the supreme or any form of self-realization without being sufficiently favored by Balarama. Bala does not mean physical strength. No one can attain spiritual perfection by physical strength. One must have the spiritual strength which is infused by Balarama or Sankarsana. Ananta or Sesa is the power which sustains all the planets in their different positions. Materially this sustaining power is known as the law of gravitation\, but actually it is the display of the potency of Sankarsana. Balarama or Sankarsana is spiritual power\, or the original spiritual master. Therefore Lord Nityananda Prabhu\, who is also the incarnation of Balarama\, is the original spiritual master. And the spiritual master is the representative of Balarama\, the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, who supplies spiritual strength. In the Caitanya-caritamrta it is confirmed that the spiritual master is the manifestation of the mercy of Krsna. \nWhen Yogamaya was thus ordered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, she circumambulated the Lord and then appeared within this material world according to His order. When the Supreme Powerful Personality of Godhead transferred Lord Sesa from the womb of Devaki to the womb of Rohini\, both of them were under the spell of Yogamaya\, which is also called yoga-nidra. When this was done\, people understood that Devaki’s seventh pregnancy was a miscarriage. Thus although Balarama appeared as the son of Devaki\, He was transferred to the womb of Rohini to appear as her son. After this arrangement\, the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, Krsna\, who is always ready to place His full potencies in His unalloyed devotees\, entered as the Lord of the whole creation within the mind of Vasudeva. It is understood in this connection that Lord Krsna first of all situated Himself in the unalloyed heart of Devaki. He was not put into the womb of Devaki by seminal discharge. The Supreme Personality of Godhead\, by His inconceivable potency\, can appear in any way. It is not necessary for Him to appear in the ordinary way by seminal injection within the womb of a woman. \nWhen Vasudeva was sustaining the form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead within his heart\, he appeared just like the glowing sun whose shining rays are always unbearable and scorching to the common man. The form of the Lord situated in the pure unalloyed heart of Vasudeva is not different from the original form of Krsna. The appearance of the form of Krsna anywhere\, and specifically within the heart\, is called dhama. Dhama does not only refer to Krsna’s form\, but His name\, His form\, His quality and His paraphernalia. Everything becomes manifest simultaneously. \nThus the eternal form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead with full potencies was transferred from the mind of Vasudeva to the mind of Devaki\, exactly as the setting sun’s rays are transferred to the full moon rising in the east. \nKrsna\, the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, entered the body of Devaki from the body of Vasudeva. He was beyond the conditions of the ordinary living entity. When Krsna is there\, it is to be understood that all His plenary expansions\, such as Narayana\, and incarnations like Lord Nrsimha\, Varaha\, etc.\, are with Him\, and They are not subject to the conditions of material existence. In this way\, Devaki became the residence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead who is one without a second and the cause of all creation. Devaki became the residence of the Absolute Truth\, but because she was within the house of Kamsa\, she looked just like a suppressed fire\, or like misused education. When fire is covered by the walls of a pot or is kept in a jug\, the illuminating rays of the fire cannot be very much appreciated. Similarly\, misused knowledge\, which does not benefit the people in general\, is not very much appreciated. So Devaki was kept within the prison walls of Kamsa’s palace\, and no one could see her transcendental beauty which resulted from her conceiving the Supreme Personality of Godhead. \nKamsa\, however\, saw the transcendental beauty of his sister Devaki\, and he at once concluded that the Supreme Personality of Godhead had taken shelter in her womb. She had never before looked so wonderfully beautiful. He could distinctly understand that there was something wonderful within the womb of Devaki. In this way\, Kamsa became perturbed. He was sure that the Supreme Personality of Godhead would kill him in the future and that He had now come. Kamsa began to think: “What is to be done with Devaki? Surely she has Visnu or Krsna within her womb\, so it is certain that Krsna has come to execute the mission of the demigods. And even if I immediately kill Devaki\, His mission cannot be frustrated.” Kamsa knew very well that no one can frustrate the purpose of Visnu. Any intelligent man can understand that the laws of God cannot be violated. His purpose will be served in spite of all impediments offered by the demons. Kamsa thought: “If I kill Devaki at the present moment\, Visnu will enforce His supreme will more vehemently. To kill Devaki just now would be a most abominable act. No one desires to kill his reputation\, even in an awkward situation; if I kill Devaki now\, my reputation will be spoiled. Devaki is a woman\, and she is under my shelter; she is pregnant\, and if I kill her\, immediately all my reputation\, the result of pious activities and duration of life\, will be finished.” \nHe also further deliberated: “A person who is too cruel\, even in this lifetime is as good as dead. No one likes a cruel person during his lifetime\, and after his death\, people curse him. On account of his self-identification with the body\, he must be degraded and pushed into the darkest region of hell.” Kamsa thus meditated on all the pros and cons of killing Devaki at that time. \nKamsa finally decided not to kill Devaki right away but to wait for the inevitable future. But his mind became absorbed in animosity against the Personality of Godhead. He patiently waited for the deliverance of the child\, expecting to kill Him\, as he had done previously with the other babies of Devaki. Thus being merged in the ocean of animosity against the Personality of Godhead\, he began to think of Krsna and Visnu while sitting\, while sleeping\, while walking\, while eating\, while working–in all the situations of his life. His mind became so much absorbed with the thought of the Supreme Personality of Godhead that indirectly he could see only Krsna or Visnu around him. Unfortunately\, although his mind was so absorbed in the thought of Visnu\, he is not recognized as a devotee because he was thinking of Krsna as an enemy. The state of mind of a great devotee is also to be always absorbed in Krsna\, but a devotee thinks of Him favorably\, not unfavorably. To think of Krsna favorably is Krsna consciousness\, but to think of Krsna unfavorably is not Krsna consciousness. \nAt this time Lord Brahma and Lord Siva\, accompanied by great sages like Narada and followed by many other demigods\, invisibly appeared in the house of Kamsa. They began to pray for the Supreme Personality of Godhead in select prayers which are very pleasing to the devotees and which award fulfillment of their desires. The first words they spoke acclaimed that the Lord is true to His vow. As stated in the Bhagavad-gita\, Krsna descends in this material world just to protect the pious and destroy the impious. That is His vow. The demigods could understand that the Lord had taken His residence within the womb of Devaki in order to fulfill this vow. The demigods were very glad that the Lord was appearing to fulfill His mission\, and they addressed Him as satyam param\, or the Supreme Absolute Truth. \nEveryone is searching after the truth. That is the philosophical way of life. The demigods give information that the Supreme Absolute Truth is Krsna. One who becomes fully Krsna conscious can attain the Absolute Truth. Krsna is the Absolute Truth. Relative truth is not truth in all the three phases of eternal time. Time is divided into past\, present and future. Krsna is Truth always\, past\, present and future. In the material world everything is being controlled by supreme time\, in the course of past\, present and future. But before the creation\, Krsna was existing\, and when there is creation\, everything is resting in Krsna\, and when this creation is finished\, Krsna will remain. Therefore\, He is Absolute Truth in all circumstances. If there is any truth within this material world\, it emanates from the Supreme Truth\, Krsna. If there is any opulence within this material world\, the cause of the opulence is Krsna. If there is any reputation within this material world\, the cause of the reputation is Krsna. If there is any strength within this material world\, the cause of such strength is Krsna. If there is any wisdom and education within this material world\, the cause of such wisdom and education is Krsna. Therefore Krsna is the source of all relative truths. \nThis material world is composed of five principal elements: earth\, water\, fire\, air and ether\, and all such elements are emanations from Krsna. The material scientists accept these primary five elements as the cause of the material manifestation\, but the elements in their gross and subtle states are produced by Krsna. The living entities who are working within this material world are also products of His marginal potency. In the Seventh Chapter of the Bhagavad-gita\, it is clearly stated that the whole manifestation is a combination of two kinds of energies of Krsna\, the superior energy and the inferior energy. The living entities are the superior energy\, and the dead material elements are His inferior energy. In its dormant stage\, everything remains in Krsna. \nThe demigods continued to offer their respectful prayers unto the supreme form of the Personality of Godhead\, Krsna\, by analytical study of the material manifestation. What is this material manifestation? It is just like a tree. A tree stands on the ground. Similarly\, the tree of the material manifestation is standing on the ground of material nature. This material manifestation is compared with a tree because a tree is ultimately cut off in due course of time. A tree is called vrksa. Vrksa means that thing which will be ultimately cut off. Therefore\, this tree of the material manifestation cannot be accepted as the Ultimate Truth. The influence of time is on the material manifestation\, but Krsna’s body is eternal. He existed before the material manifestation\, He is existing while the material manifestation is continuing\, and when it will be dissolved\, He will continue to exist. \nThe Katha Upanisad also cites this example of the tree of material manifestation standing on the ground of material nature. This tree has two kinds of fruits\, distress and happiness. Those who are living on the tree of the body are just like two birds. One bird is the localized aspect of Krsna known as the Paramatma\, and the other bird is the living entity. The living entity is eating the fruits of this material manifestation. Sometimes he eats the fruit of happiness\, and sometimes he eats the fruit of distress. But the other bird is not interested in eating the fruit of distress or happiness because he is self-satisfied. The Katha Upanisad states that one bird on the tree of the body is eating the fruits\, and the other bird is simply witnessing. The roots of this tree extend in three directions. That means the root of the tree is the three modes of material nature: goodness\, passion and ignorance. Just as the tree’s root expands\, so\, by association of the modes of material nature (goodness\, passion and ignorance)\, one expands his duration of material existence. The taste of the fruits are of four kinds: religiosity\, economic development\, sense gratification and ultimately\, liberation. According to the different associations in the three modes of material nature\, the living entities are tasting different kinds of religiosity\, different kinds of economic development\, different kinds of sense gratification and different kinds of liberation. Practically all material work is performed in ignorance\, but because there are three qualities\, sometimes the quality of ignorance is covered with goodness or passion. The taste of these material fruits is accepted through five senses. The five sense organs through which knowledge is acquired are subjected to six kinds of whips: lamentation\, illusion\, infirmity\, death\, hunger and thirst. This material body\, or the material manifestation\, is covered by seven layers: skin\, muscle\, flesh\, marrow\, bone\, fat and semen. The branches of the tree are eight: earth\, water\, fire\, air\, ether\, mind\, intelligence and ego. There are nine gates in this body: the two eyes\, two nostrils\, two ears\, one mouth\, one genital\, one rectum. And there are ten kinds of internal air passing within the body: prana\, apana\, udana\, vyana\, samana\, etc. The two birds seated in this tree\, as explained above\, are the living entity and the localized Supreme Personality of Godhead. \nThe root cause of the material manifestation described here is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Supreme Personality of Godhead expands Himself and takes charge of the three qualities of the material world. Visnu takes charge of the modes of goodness\, Brahma takes charge of the modes of passion\, and Lord Siva takes charge of the modes of ignorance. Brahma\, by the modes of passion\, creates this manifestation\, Lord Visnu maintains this manifestation by the modes of goodness\, and Lord Siva annihilates it by the modes of ignorance. The whole creation ultimately rests in the Supreme Lord. He is the cause of creation\, maintenance and dissolution. And when the whole manifestation is dissolved\, in its subtle form as the energy of the Lord\, it rests within the body of the Supreme Lord. \n“At the present\,” the demigods prayed\, “the Supreme Lord Krsna is appearing just for the maintenance of this manifestation.” Actually the Supreme Cause is one\, but\, being deluded by the three modes of material nature\, less intelligent persons see that the material world is manifested through different causes. Those who are intelligent can see that the cause is one\, Krsna. As it is stated in the Brahma-samhita: sarva-karana-karanam. Krsna\, the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, is the cause of all causes. Brahma is the deputed agent for creation\, Visnu is the expansion of Krsna for maintenance\, and Lord Siva is the expansion of Krsna for dissolution. \n“Our dear Lord\,” the demigods prayed\, “it is very difficult to understand Your eternal form of personality. People in general are unable to understand Your actual form; therefore You are personally descending to exhibit Your original eternal form. Somehow people can understand the different incarnations of Your Lordship\, but they are puzzled to understand the eternal form of Krsna with two hands\, moving among human beings exactly like one of them. This eternal form of Your Lordship is ever increasing in transcendental pleasure for the devotees\, but for the nondevotees\, this form is very dangerous.” As stated in the Bhagavad-gita\, Krsna is very pleasing to the sadhu. It is said\, paritranaya sadhunam. But this form is very dangerous for the demons because Krsna also descends to kill the demons. He is\, therefore\, simultaneously pleasing to the devotees and dangerous to the demons. \n“Our dear lotus-eyed Lord\, You are the source of pure goodness. There are many great sages who simply by samadhi\, or transcendentally meditating upon Your lotus feet and thus being absorbed in Your thought\, have easily transformed the great ocean of nescience created by the material nature to no more than water in a calf’s hoofprint.” The purpose of meditation is to focus the mind upon the Personality of Godhead\, beginning from His lotus feet. Simply by meditation on the lotus feet of the Lord\, great sages cross over this vast ocean of material existence without difficulty. \n“O self-illuminated one\, the great saintly persons who have crossed over the ocean of nescience\, by the help of the transcendental boat of Your lotus feet\, have not taken away that boat. It is still lying on this side.” The demigods are using a nice simile. If one takes a boat to cross over a river\, the boat also goes with one to the other side of the river. And so when one reaches the destination\, how can the same boat be available to those who are still on the other side? To answer this difficulty\, the demigods say in their prayer that the boat is not taken away. The devotees still remaining on the other side are able to pass over the ocean of material nature because the pure devotees do not take the boat with them when they cross over. When one simply approaches the boat\, the whole ocean of material nescience is reduced to the size of water in a calf’s hoofprint. Therefore\, the devotees do not need to take a boat to the other side; they simply cross the ocean immediately. Because the great saintly persons are compassionate toward all conditioned souls\, the boat is still lying at the lotus feet of the Lord. One can meditate upon His feet at any time\, and by so doing\, one can cross over the great ocean of material existence. \nMeditation means concentration upon the lotus feet of the Lord. Lotus feet indicate the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Those who are impersonalists do not recognize the lotus feet of the Lord\, and therefore their object of meditation is something impersonal. The demigods express their mature verdict that persons who are interested in meditating on something void or impersonal cannot cross over the ocean of nescience. Such persons are simply imagining that they have become liberated. “O lotus-eyed Lord! Their intelligence is contaminated because they fail to meditate upon the lotus feet of Your Lordship.” As a result of this neglectful activity\, the impersonalists fall down again into the material way of conditioned life\, although they may temporarily rise up to the point of impersonal realization. Impersonalists\, after undergoing severe austerities and penances\, merge themselves into the Brahman effulgence or impersonal Brahman existence. But their minds are not free from material contamination; they have simply tried to negate the material ways of thinking. That does not mean that they have become liberated. Thus they fall down. In the Bhagavad-gita it is stated that the impersonalist has to undergo great tribulation in realizing the ultimate goal. At the beginning of the Srimad-Bhagavatam\, it is also stated that without devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, one cannot achieve liberation from the bondage of fruitive activities. The statement of Lord Krsna is there in the Bhagavad-gita\, and in the Srimad-Bhagavatam the statement of the great sage Narada is there\, and here also the demigods confirm it. “Persons who have not taken to devotional service are understood to have come short of the ultimate purpose of knowledge and are not favored by Your grace.” The impersonalists simply think that they are liberated\, but actually they have no feeling for the Personality of Godhead. They think that when Krsna comes into the material world\, He accepts a material body. They therefore overlook the transcendental body of Krsna. This is also confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita: Avajananti mam mudhah. In spite of conquering material lust and rising up to the point of liberation\, the impersonalists fall down. If they are engaged just in knowing things for the sake of knowledge and do not take to the devotional service of the Lord\, they cannot achieve the desired result. Their achievement is the trouble they take\, and that is all. It is clearly stated in the Bhagavad-gita that to realize Brahman identification is not all. Brahman identification may help one become joyful without material attachment or detachment and to achieve the platform of equanimity\, but after this stage\, one has to take to devotional service. When one takes to devotional service after being elevated to the platform of Brahman realization\, he is then admitted into the spiritual kingdom for permanent residence in association with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is the result of devotional service. Those who are devotees of the Supreme Personality of Godhead never fall down like the impersonalists. Even if the devotees fall down\, they remain affectionately attached to their Lordship. They can meet all kinds of obstacles on the path of devotional service\, and freely\, without any fear\, they can surmount such obstacles. Because of their surrender\, they are certain that Krsna will always protect them. As it is promised by Krsna in the Bhagavad-gita: “My devotees are never vanquished.” \n“Our dear Lord\, You have appeared in Your original unalloyed form\, the eternal form of goodness\, for the welfare of all living entities within this material world. Taking advantage of Your appearance\, all of them can now very easily understand the nature and form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Persons who belong to the four divisions of the social order (the brahmacaris\, the grhasthas\, the vanaprasthas and the sannyasis) can all take advantage of Your appearance. \n“Dear Lord\, husband of the goddess of fortune\, devotees who are dovetailed in Your service do not fall down from their high position like the impersonalists. Being protected by You\, the devotees are able to traverse over the heads of many of Maya’s commanders-in-chief\, who can always put stumbling blocks on the path of liberation. My dear Lord\, You appear in Your transcendental form for the benefit of the living entities so that they can see You face to face and offer their worshipful sacrifices by ritualistic performance of the Vedas\, mystic meditation and devotional service as recommended in the scriptures. Dear Lord\, if You did not appear in Your eternal transcendental form\, full of bliss and knowledge–which can eradicate all kinds of speculative ignorance about Your position–then all people would simply speculate about You according to their respective modes of material nature.” \nThe appearance of Krsna is the answer to all imaginative iconography of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Everyone imagines the form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead according to his mode of material nature. In the Brahma-samhita it is said that the Lord is the oldest person. Therefore a section of religionists imagine that God must be very old\, and therefore they depict a form of the Lord like a very old man. But in the same Brahma-samhita\, that is contradicted; although He is the oldest of all living entities\, He has His eternal form as a fresh youth. The exact words used in this connection in the Srimad-Bhagavatam are vijnanam ajnanabhid apamarjanam. Vijnanam means transcendental knowledge of the Supreme Personality. Vijnanam is also experienced knowledge. Transcendental knowledge has to be accepted by the descending process of disciplic succession as Brahma presents the knowledge of Krsna in the Brahma-samhita. Brahma-samhita is vijnanam as realized by Brahma’s transcendental experience\, and in that way he presented the form and the pastimes of Krsna in the transcendental abode. Ajnanabhid means that which can match all kinds of speculation. In ignorance\, people are imagining the form of the Lord; sometimes He has no form and sometimes He has form\, according to their different imaginations. But the presentation of Krsna in the Brahma-samhita is vijnanam–scientific\, experienced knowledge given by Lord Brahma and accepted by Lord Caitanya. There is no doubt about it. Sri Krsna’s form\, Sri Krsna’s flute\, Krsna’s color–everything is reality. Here it is said that this vijnanam is always defeating all kinds of speculative knowledge. “Therefore\, without Your appearing as Krsna\, as You are\, neither ajnana-bhida (nescience of speculative knowledge) nor vijnanam would be realized. Ajnanabhid apamarjanam–by Your appearance the speculative knowledge of ignorance will be vanquished and the real experienced knowledge of authorities like Lord Brahma will be established. Men influenced by the three modes of material nature imagine their own God according to the modes of material nature. In this way God is presented in various ways\, but Your appearance will establish what the real form of God is.” \nThe highest blunder committed by the impersonalists is to think that when the incarnation of God comes\, He accepts the form of matter in the modes of goodness. Actually the form of Krsna or Narayana is transcendental to any material idea. Even the greatest impersonalist\, Sankaracarya\, has admitted that narayanah paro ‘vyaktat: the material creation is caused by the avyakta impersonal manifestation of matter or the nonphenomenal total reservation of matter\, and Krsna is transcendental to that material conception. That is expressed in the Srimad-Bhagavatam as suddha-sattva\, or transcendental. He does not belong to the material mode of goodness\, and He is above the position of material goodness. He belongs to the transcendental eternal status of bliss and knowledge. \n“Dear Lord\, when You appear in Your different incarnations\, You take different names and forms according to different situations. Lord Krsna is Your name because You are all attractive; You are called Syamasundara because of Your transcendental beauty. Syama means blackish\, yet they say that You are more beautiful than thousands of Cupids. Kandarpa-koti-kamaniya. Although You appear in a color which is compared to the blackish cloud\, because You are transcendental Absolute\, Your beauty is many many times more attractive than the delicate body of Cupid. Sometimes You are called Giridhari because You lifted the hill known as Govardhana. You are sometimes called Nandanandana or Vasudeva or Devakinandana because You appear as the son of Maharaja Nanda or Devaki or Vasudeva. Impersonalists think that Your many names or forms are according to a particular type of work and quality because they accept You from the position of a material observer. \n“Our dear Lord\, the way of understanding is not to study Your absolute nature\, form and activities by mental speculation. One must engage himself in devotional service; then one can understand Your absolute nature\, transcendental form\, name and quality. Actually only a person who has a little taste for the service of Your lotus feet can understand Your transcendental nature or form and quality. Others may go on speculating for millions of years\, but it is not possible for them to understand even a single part of Your actual position.” In other words\, the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, Krsna\, cannot be understood by the nondevotees because there is a curtain of Yogamaya which covers Krsna’s actual features. As confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita\, naham prakasah sarvasya. The Lord says\, “I am not exposed to anyone and everyone.” When Krsna came\, He was actually present on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra\, and everyone saw Him. But not everyone could understand that He was the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Still\, everyone who died in His presence attained complete liberation from material bondage and was transferred to the spiritual world. \n“O Lord\, the impersonalists or nondevotees cannot understand that Your name is identical with Your form.” Since the Lord is absolute\, there is no difference between His name and His actual form. In the material world there is a difference between form and name. The mango fruit is different from the name of the mango. One cannot taste the mango fruit simply by chanting\, “mango\, mango\, mango.” But the devotee who knows that there is no difference between the name and the form of the Lord chants Hare Krsna\, Hare Krsna\, Krsna Krsna\, Hare Hare\, Hare Rama\, Hare Rama\, Rama Rama\, Hare Hare and realizes that he is always in Krsna’s company. \nFor persons who are not very advanced in absolute knowledge of the Supreme\, Lord Krsna exhibits His transcendental pastimes. They can simply think of the pastimes of the Lord and get the full benefit. Since there is no difference between the transcendental name and form of the Lord\, there is no difference between the transcendental pastimes and the form of the Lord. For those who are less intelligent (like women\, laborers or the mercantile class)\, the great sage Vyasadeva wrote Mahabharata. In the Mahabharata\, Krsna is present in His different activities. Mahabharata is history\, and simply by studying\, hearing and memorizing the transcendental activities of Krsna\, the less intelligent can also gradually rise to the standard of pure devotees. \nThe pure devotees\, who are always absorbed in the thought of the transcendental lotus feet of Krsna and who are always engaged in devotional service in full Krsna consciousness\, are never to be considered to be in the material world. Sri Rupa Gosvami has explained that those who are always engaged in Krsna consciousness\, by body\, mind and activities\, are to be considered liberated even within this body. This is also confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita: those who are engaged in the devotional service of the Lord have already transcended the material position. \nKrsna appears to give a chance both to the devotees and nondevotees for realization of the ultimate goal of life. The devotees get the direct chance to see Him and worship Him. Those who are not on that platform get the chance to become acquainted with His activities and thus become elevated to the same position. \n“O dear Lord\,” the demigods continued\, “You are unborn; therefore we do not find any reason for Your appearance other than for Your pleasurable pastimes.” Although the reason for the appearance of the Lord is stated in the Bhagavad-gita (He descends just to give protection to the devotee and vanquish the nondevotee)\, actually He descends for His pleasure-meeting with the devotees\, not really to vanquish the nondevotees. The nondevotees can be vanquished simply by material nature. “The action and reaction of the external enregy of material nature (creation\, maintenance and annihilation) are being carried on automatically. But simply by taking shelter of Your holy name–because Your holy name and Your personality are nondifferent–the devotees are sufficiently protected.” The protection of the devotees and the annihilation of the nondevotees are actually not the business of the Supreme Personality of Godhead when He descends. They are just for His transcendental pleasure. There cannot be any other reason for His appearance. \n“Our dear Lord\, You are appearing as the best of the Yadu dynasty\, and we are offering our respectful humble obeisances unto Your lotus feet. Before this appearance\, You also appeared as the fish incarnation\, the horse incarnation\, the tortoise incarnation\, the swan incarnation\, as King Ramacandra\, as Parasurama\, and as many other incarnations. You appeared just to protect the devotees\, and we request You in Your present appearance as the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself to give us similar protection all over the three worlds preme Personality of Godhead\, appearing along with all His plenary extensions. He is the original Personality of Godhead appearing for our welfare. Therefore you should not be afraid of your brother\, the King of Bhoja. Your son Lord Krsna\, who is the original Personality of Godhead\, will appear for the protection of the pious Yadu dynasty. The Lord is appearing not only alone but accompanied by His immediate plenary portion\, Balarama.” \nDevaki was very much afraid of her brother Kamsa because he had already killed so many of her children. She used to remain very anxious about Krsna. In the Visnu Purana it is stated that in order to pacify Devaki\, all the demigods\, along with their wives\, used to always visit her to encourage her not to be afraid that her son would be killed by Kamsa. Krsna\, who was within her womb\, was to appear not only to diminish the burden of the world but specifically to protect the interest of the Yadu dynasty\, and certainly to protect Devaki and Vasudeva. \nThus ends the Bhaktivedanta purport of the Second Chapter of Krsna\, “Prayers by the Demigods for Lord Krsna in the Womb.” \nCHAPTER THREE\nThe Birth of Lord Krishna \nAs stated in the Bhagavad-gita\, the Lord says that His appearance\, birth\, and activities\, are all transcendental\, and one who understands them factually becomes immediately eligible to be transferred to the spiritual world. The Lord’s appearance or birth is not like that of an ordinary man who is forced to accept a material body according to his past deeds. The Lord’s appearance is explained in the Second Chapter: He appears out of His own sweet pleasure. When the time was mature for the appearance of the Lord\, the constellations became very auspicious. The astrological influence of the star known as Rohini was also predominant because this star is considered to be very auspicious. Rohini is under the direct supervision of Brahma. According to the astrological conclusion\, besides the proper situation of the stars\, there are auspicious and inauspicious moments due to the different situations of the different planetary systems. At the time of Krsna’s birth\, the planetary systems were automatically adjusted so that everything became auspicious. \nAt that time\, in all directions\, east\, west\, south\, north\, everywhere\, there was an atmosphere of peace and prosperity. There were auspicious stars visible in the sky\, and on the surface in all towns and villages or pasturing grounds and within the minds of everyone there were signs of good fortune. The rivers were flowing full of waters\, and lakes were beautifully decorated with lotus flowers. The forests were full with beautiful birds and peacocks. All the birds within the forests began to sing with sweet voices\, and the peacocks began to dance along with their consorts. The wind blew very pleasantly\, carrying the aroma of different flowers\, and the sensation of bodily touch was very pleasing. At home\, the brahmanas\, who were accustomed to offer sacrifices in the fire\, found their homes very pleasant for offerings. Due to disturbances created by the demoniac kings\, the sacrificial fire alter had been almost stopped in the houses of brahmanas\, but now they could find the opportunity to start the fire peacefully. Being forbidden to offer sacrifices\, the brahmanas were very distressed in mind\, intelligence and activities\, but just on the point of Krsna’s appearance\, automatically their minds became full of joy because they could hear loud vibrations in the sky of transcendental sounds proclaiming the appearance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. \nThe denizens of the Gandharva and Kinnara planets began to sing\, and the denizens of Siddhaloka and the planets of the Caranas began to offer prayers in the service of the Personality of Godhead. In the heavenly planets\, the angels along with their wives\, accompanied by the Apsaras\, began to dance. \nThe great sages and the demigods\, being pleased\, began to shower flowers. At the seashore\, there was the sound of mild waves\, and above the sea there were clouds in the sky which began to thunder very pleasingly. \nWhen things were adjusted like this\, Lord Visnu\, who is residing within the heart of every living entity\, appeared in the darkness of night as the Supreme Personality of Godhead before Devaki\, who also appeared as one of the demigoddesses. The appearance of Lord Visnu at that time could be compared with the full moon in the sky as it rises on the eastern horizon. The objection may be raised that\, since Lord Krsna appeared on the eighth day of the waning moon\, there could be no rising of the full moon. In answer to this it may be said that Lord Krsna appeared in the dynasty which is in the hierarchy of the moon; therefore\, although the moon was incomplete on that night\, because of the Lord’s appearance in the dynasty wherein the moon is himself the original person\, the moon was in an overjoyous condition\, so by the grace of Krsna he could appear just as a full moon. \nIn an astronomical treatise by the name Khamanikya\, the constellations at the time of the appearance of Lord Krsna are very nicely described. It is confirmed that the child born at that auspicious moment was the Supreme Brahman or the Absolute Truth. \nVasudeva saw that wonderful child born as a baby with four hands\, holding conchshell\, club\, disc\, and lotus flower\, decorated with the mark of Srivatsa\, wearing the jeweled necklace of kaustubha stone\, dressed in yellow silk\, appearing dazzling like a bright blackish cloud\, wearing a helmet bedecked with the vaidurya stone\, valuable bracelets\, earrings and similar other ornaments all over His body and an abundance of hair on His head. Due to the extraordinary features of the child\, Vasudeva was struck with wonder. How could a newly born child be so decorated? He could therefore understand that Lord Krsna had now appeared\, and he became overpowered by the occasion. Vasudeva very humbly wondered that although he was an ordinary living entity conditioned by material nature and was externally imprisoned by Kamsa\, the all-pervading Personality of Godhead\, Visnu or Krsna\, was appearing as a child in his home\, exactly in His original position. No earthly child is born with four hands decorated with ornaments and nice clothing\, fully equipped with all the signs of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Over and over again\, Vasudeva glanced at his child\, and he considered how to celebrate this auspicious moment: “Generally\, when a male child is born\,” he thought\, “people observe the occasion with jubilant celebrations\, and in my home\, although I am imprisoned\, the Supreme Personality of Godhead has taken birth. How many millions of millions of times should I be prepared to observe this auspicious ceremony!” \nWhen Vasudeva\, who is also called Anakadundubhi\, was looking at his newborn baby\, he was so happy that he wanted to give many thousands of cows in charity to the brahmanas. According to the Vedic system\, whenever there is an auspicious ceremony in the ksatriya king’s palace\, the king gives many things in charity. Cows decorated with golden ornaments are delivered to the brahmanas and sages. Vasudeva wanted to perform a charitable ceremony to celebrate Krsna’s appearance\, but because he was shackled within the walls of Kamsa’s prison\, this was not possible. Instead\, within his mind he gave thousands of cows to the brahmanas. \nWhen Vasudeva was convinced that the newborn child was the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself\, he bowed down with folded hands and began to offer Him prayers. At that time Vasudeva was in the transcendental position\, and he became completely free from all fear of Kamsa. The newborn baby was also flashing His effulgence within the room in which He appeared. \nVasudeva then began to offer his prayers. “My dear Lord\, I can understand who You are. You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, the Supersoul of all living entities and the Absolute Truth. You have appeared in Your own eternal form which is directly perceived by us. I understand that because I am afraid of Kamsa\, You have appeared just to deliver me from that fear. You do not belong to this material world; You are the same person who brings about the cosmic manifestation simply by glancing over material nature.” \nOne may argue that the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, who creates the whole cosmic manifestation simply by His glance\, cannot come within the womb of Devaki\, the wife of Vasudeva. To eradicate this argument\, Vasudeva said\, “My dear Lord\, it is not a very wonderful thing that You appear within the womb of Devaki because the creation was also made in that way. You were lying in the Causal Ocean as Maha-Visnu\, and by Your breathing process\, innumerable universes came into existence. Then You entered into each of the universes as Garbhodakasayi Visnu. Then again You expanded Yourself as Ksirodakasayi Visnu and entered into the hearts of all living entities and entered even within the atoms. Therefore Your entrance in the womb of Devaki is understandable in the same way. You appear to have entered\, but You are simultaneously all-pervading. We can understand Your entrance and nonentrance from material examples. The total material energy remains intact even after being divided into sixteen elements. The material body is nothing but the combination of the five gross elements–namely earth\, water\, fire\, air and ether. Whenever there is a material body\, it appears that such elements are newly created\, but actually the elements are always existing outside of the body. Similarly\, although You appear as a child in the womb of Devaki\, You are also existing outside. You are always in Your abode\, but still You can simultaneously expand Yourself into millions of forms. \n“One has to understand Your appearance with great intelligence because the material energy is also emanating from You. You are the original source of the material energy\, just as the sun is the source of the sunshine. The sunshine cannot cover the sun globe\, nor can the material energy–being an emanation from You–cover You. You appear to be in the three modes of material energy\, but actually the three modes of material energy cannot cover You. This is understood by the highly intellectual philosophers. In other words\, although You appear to be within the material energy\, You are never covered by it.” \nWe hear from the Vedic version that the Supreme Brahman exhibits His effulgence\, and therefore everything becomes illuminated. We can understand from Brahma-samhita that the brahmajyoti\, or the Brahman effulgence\, emanates from the body of the Supreme Lord. And from the Brahman effulgence\, all creation takes place. It is further stated in the Bhagavad-gita that the Lord is also the support of the Brahman effulgence. Originally He is the root cause of everything. But persons who are less intelligent think that when the Supreme Personality of Godhead comes within this material world\, He accepts the material qualities. Such conclusions are not very mature\, but are made by the less intelligent. \nThe Supreme Personality of Godhead is directly and indirectly existing everywhere; He is outside this material creation\, and He is also within it. He is within this material creation not only as Garbhodakasayi Visnu; He is also within the atom. Existence is due to His presence. Nothing can be separated from His existence. In the Vedic injunction we find that the Supreme Soul or the root cause of everything has to be searched out because nothing exists independent of the Supreme Soul. Therefore the material manifestation is also a transformation of His potency. Both inert matter and the living force–soul–are emanations from Him. Only the foolish conclude that when the Supreme Lord appears He accepts the conditions of matter. Even if He appears to have accepted the material body\, He is still not subjected to any material condition. Krsna has therefore appeared and defeated all imperfect conclusions about the appearance and disappearance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. \n“My Lord\, Your appearance\, existence and disappearance are beyond the influence of the material qualities. Because Your Lordship is the controller of everything and the resting place of the Supreme Brahman\, there is nothing inconceivable or contradictory in You. As You have said\, material nature works under Your superintendence. It is just like government officers working under the orders of the chief executive. The influence of subordinate activities cannot affect You. The Supreme Brahman and all phenomena are existing within You\, and all the activities of material nature are controlled by Your Lordship. \n“You are called suklam. Suklam\, or ‘whiteness’ is the symbolic representation of the Absolute Truth because it is unaffected by the material qualities. Lord Brahma is called rakta\, or red\, because Brahma represents the qualities of passion for creation. Darkness is entrusted to Lord Siva because he annihilates the cosmos. The creation\, annihilation and maintenance of this cosmic manifestation is conducted by Your potencies\, yet You are always unaffected by those qualities. As confirmed in the Vedas\, harir hi nirgunah saksat: the Supreme Personality of Godhead is always free from all material qualities. It is also said that the qualities of passion and ignorance are nonexistent in the person of the Supreme Lord. \n“My Lord\, You are the supreme controller\, the Personality of Godhead\, the supreme great\, maintaining the order of this cosmic manifestation. And in spite of Your being the supreme controller\, You have so kindly appeared in my home. The purpose of Your appearance is to kill the followers of the demoniac rulers of the world who are in the dress of royal princes but are actually demons. I am sure that You will kill all of them and their followers and soldiers. \n“I understand that You have appeared to kill the uncivilized Kamsa and his followers. But knowing that You were to appear to kill him and his followers\, he has already killed so many of Your predecessors\, elder brothers. Now he is simply awaiting the news of Your birth. As soon as he hears about it\, he will immediately appear with all kinds of weapons to kill You.” \nAfter this prayer of Vasudeva\, Devaki\, the mother of Krsna\, offered her prayers. She was very frightened because of her brother’s atrocities. Devaki said\, “My dear Lord\, Your eternal forms\, like Narayana\, Lord Rama\, Sesa\, Varaha\, Nrsimha\, Vamana\, Baladeva\, and millions of similar incarnations emanating from Visnu\, are described in the Vedic literature as original. You are original because all Your forms as incarnations are outside of this material creation. Your form was existing before this cosmic manifestation was created. Your forms are eternal and all-pervading. They are self-effulgent\, changeless and uncontaminated by the material qualities. Such eternal forms are ever-cognizant and full of bliss; they are situated in transcendental goodness and are always engaged in different pastimes. You are not limited to a particular form only; all such transcendental eternal forms are self-sufficient. I can understand that You are the Supreme Lord Visnu. \n“After many millions of years\, when Lord Brahma comes to the end of his life\, the annihilation of the cosmic manifestation takes place. At that time the five elements–namely earth\, water\, fire\, air and ether–enter into the mahat-tattva. The mahat-tattva again enters\, by the force of time\, into the nonmanifested total material energy; the total material energy enters into the energetic pradhana\, and the pradhana enters into You. Therefore after the annihilation of the whole cosmic manifestation\, You alone remain with Your transcendental name\, form\, quality and paraphernalia. \n“My Lord\, I offer my respectful obeisances unto You because You are the director of the unmanifested total energy\, and the ultimate reservoir of the material nature. My Lord\, the whole cosmic manifestation is under the influence of time\, beginning from the moment up to the duration of the year. All act under Your direction. You are the original director of everything and the reservoir of all potent energies. \n“Therefore my Lord\, I request You to save me from the cruel hands of the son of Ugrasena\, Kamsa. I am praying to Your Lordship to please rescue me from this fearful condition because You are always ready to give protection to Your servitors.” The Lord has confirmed this statement in the Bhagavad-gita by assuring Arjuna\, “You may declare to the world\, My devotee shall never be vanquished.” \nWhile thus praying to the Lord for rescue\, mother Devaki expressed her motherly affection: “I understand that this transcendental form is generally perceived in meditation by the great sages\, but I am still afraid because as soon as Kamsa understands that You have appeared\, he might harm You. So I request that for the time being You become invisible to our material eyes.” In other words\, she requested the Lord to assume the form of an ordinary child. “My only cause of fear from my brother Kamsa is due to Your appearance. My Lord Madhusudana\, Kamsa may know that You are already born. Therefore I request You to conceal this four-armed form of Your Lordship which holds the four symbols of Visnu–namely the conchshell\, the disc\, the club and the lotus flower. My dear Lord\, at the end of the annihilation of the cosmic manifestation\, You put the whole universe within Your abdomen; still by Your unalloyed mercy You have appeared in my womb. I am surprised that You imitate the activities of ordinary human beings just to please Your devotee.” \nOn hearing the prayers of Devaki\, the Lord replied\, “My dear mother\, in the millennium of Svayambhuva Manu\, My father Vasudeva was living as one of the Prajapatis\, and his name at that time was Sutapa\, and you were his wife named Prsni. At that time\, when Lord Brahma was desiring to increase the population\, he requested you to generate offspring. You controlled your senses and performed severe austerities. By practicing the breathing exercise of the yoga system\, both you and your husband could tolerate all the influences of the material laws: the rainy season\, the onslaught of the wind\, and the scorching heat of the sunshine. You also executed all religious principles. In this way you were able to cleanse your heart and control the influence of material law. In executing your austerity\, you used to eat only the leaves of the trees which fell to the ground. Then with steady mind and controlled sex drive\, you worshiped Me\, desiring some wonderful benediction from Me. Both of you practiced severe austerities for twelve thousand years\, by the calculation of the demigods. During that time\, your mind was always absorbed in Me. When you were executing devotional service and always thinking of Me within your heart\, I was very much pleased with you. O sinless mother\, your heart is therefore always pure. At that time also I appeared before you in this form just to fulfill your desire\, and I asked you to ask whatever you desired. At that time you wished to have Me born as your son. Although you saw Me personally\, instead of asking for your complete liberation from the material bondage\, under the influence of My energy\, you asked Me to become your son.” \nIn other words\, the Lord selected His mother and father–namely Prsni and Sutapa–specifically to appear in the material world. Whenever the Lord comes as a human being\, He must have someone as a mother and father\, so He selected Prsni and Sutapa perpetually as His mother and father. And on account of this\, both Prsni and Sutapa could not ask the Lord for liberation. Liberation is not so important as the transcendental loving service of the Lord. The Lord could have awarded Prsni and Sutapa immediate liberation\, but He preferred to keep them within this material world for His different appearances\, as will be explained in the following verses. On receiving the benediction from the Lord to become His father and mother\, both Prsni and Sutapa returned from the activities of austerity and lived as husband and wife in order to beget a child who was the Supreme Lord Himself. \nIn due course of time Prsni became pregnant and gave birth to the child. The Lord spoke to Devaki and Vasudeva: “At that time My name was Prsnigarbha. In the next millennium also you took birth as Aditi and Kasyapa\, and I became your child of the name Upendra. At that time My form was just like a dwarf\, and for this reason I was known as Vamanadeva. I gave you the benediction that I would take birth as your son three times. The first time I was known as Prsnigarbha\, born of Prsni and Sutapa\, the next birth I was Upendra born of Aditi and Kasyapa\, and now for the third time I am born as Krsna from you\, Devaki and Vasudeva. I appeared in this Visnu form just to convince you that I am the same Supreme Personality of Godhead again taken birth. I could have appeared just like an ordinary child\, but in that way you would not believe that I\, the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, have taken birth in your womb. My dear father and mother\, you have therefore raised Me many times as your child\, with great affection and love\, and I am therefore very pleased and obliged to you. And I assure you that this time you shall go back to home\, back to Godhead\, on account of your perfection in your mission. I know you are very concerned about Me and afraid of Kamsa. Therefore I order you to take Me immediately to Gokula and replace Me with the daughter who has just been born to Yasoda.” \nHaving spoken thus in the presence of His father and mother\, the Lord turned Himself into an ordinary child and remained silent. \nBeing ordered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, Vasudeva attempted to take his son from the delivery room\, and exactly at that time\, a daughter was born of Nanda and Yasoda. She was Yogamaya\, the internal potency of the Lord. By the influence of this internal potency\, Yogamaya\, all the residents of Kamsa’s palace\, especially the doorkeepers\, were overwhelmed with deep sleep\, and all the palace doors opened\, although they were barred and shackled with iron chains. The night was very dark\, but as soon as Vasudeva took Krsna on his lap and went out\, he could see everything just as in the sunlight. \nIn the Caitanya-caritamrta it is said that Krsna is just like sunlight\, and wherever there is Krsna\, the illusory energy\, which is compared to darkness\, cannot remain. When Vasudeva was carrying Krsna\, the darkness of the night disappeared. All the prison doors automatically opened. At the same time there was a thunder in the sky and severe rainfall. While Vasudeva was carrying his son Krsna in the falling rain\, Lord Sesa in the shape of a serpent spread His hood over the head of Vasudeva so that he would not be hampered by the rainfall. Vasudeva came onto the bank of the Yamuna and saw that the water of the Yamuna was roaring with waves and that the whole span was full of foam. Still\, in that furious feature\, the river gave passage to Vasudeva to cross\, just as the great Indian Ocean gave a path to Lord Rama when He was bridging over the gulf. In this way Vasudeva crossed the river Yamuna. On the other side\, he went to the place of Nanda Maharaja situated in Gokula\, where he saw that all the cowherd men were fast asleep. He took the opportunity of silently entering into the house of Yasoda\, and without difficulty he replaced his son\, taking away the baby girl newly born in the house of Yasoda. Then\, after entering the house very silently and exchanging the boy with the girl\, he again returned to the prison of Kamsa and silently put the girl on the lap of Devaki. He again clamped the shackles on himself so that Kamsa could not recognize that so many things had happened. \nMother Yasoda understood that a child was born of her\, but because she was very tired from the labor of childbirth\, she was fast asleep. When she awoke\, she could not remember whether she had given birth to a male or a female child. \nThus ends the Bhaktivedanta purport of the Third Chapter of Krsna\, “Birth of Lord Krsna.” \nCHAPTER FOUR\nKamsa Begins His Persecutions \nAfter Vasudeva adjusted all the doors and gates\, the gatekeepers awoke and heard the newborn child crying. Kamsa was waiting to hear the news of the child’s birth\, and the gatekeepers immediately approached him and informed him that the child was born. At that time\, Kamsa got up from his bed very quickly and exclaimed\, “Now the cruel death of my life is born!” Kamsa became perplexed now that his death was approaching\, and his hair stood on end. Immediately he proceeded toward the place where the child was born. \nDevaki\, on seeing her brother approaching\, prayed in a very meek attitude to Kamsa: “My dear brother\, please do not kill this female child. I promise that this child will be the wife of your son; therefore don’t kill her. You are not to be killed by any female child. That was the omen. You are to be killed by a male child\, so please do not kill her. My dear brother\, you have killed so many of my children who were just born\, shining as the sun. That is not your fault. You have been advised by demoniac friends to kill my children. But now I beg you to excuse this girl. Let her live as my daughter.” \nKamsa was so cruel that he did not listen to the beautiful prayers of his sister Devaki. He forcibly grabbed the newborn child to rebuke his sister and attempted to dash her on the stone mercilessly. This is a graphic example of a cruel brother who could sacrifice all relationships for the sake of personal gratification. But immediately the child slipped out of his hands\, went up in the sky and appeared with eight arms as the younger sister of Visnu. She was decorated with a nice dress and flower garlands and ornaments; in her eight hands she held a bow\, lancet\, arrows\, bell\, conchshell\, disc\, club and shield. \nSeeing the appearance of the child (who was actually the goddess Durga)\, all the demigods from different planets like Siddhaloka\, Caranaloka\, Gandharvaloka\, Apsaroloka\, Kinnaraloka\, and Uragaloka presented her articles and began to offer their respective prayers. From above\, the goddess addressed Kamsa: “You rascal\, how can you kill me? The child who will kill you is already born before me somewhere within this world. Don’t be so cruel to your poor sister.” After this appearance\, the goddess Durga became known by various names in various parts of the world. \nAfter hearing these words\, Kamsa became very much overwhelmed with fear. Out of pity\, he immediately released Vasudeva and Devaki from the bondage of their shackles and very politely began to address them. He said\, “My dear sister and brother-in-law\, I have acted just like a demon in killing my own nephews I have given up all consideration of our intimate relationship. I do not know what will be the result of these acts of mine. Probably I shall be sent to the hell where killers of the brahmanas go. I am surprised\, however\, that the celestial prophecy has not come true. False propaganda is not found only in the human society. Now it appears that even the celestial denizens speak lies. Because I believed in the words of the celestial denizens\, I have committed so many sins by killing the children of my sister. My dear Vasudeva and Devaki\, you are both very great souls. I have nothing to instruct you\, but still I request that you not be sorry for the death of your children. Every one of us is under the control of superior power\, and that superior power does not allow us to remain together. We are bound to be separated from our friends and relatives in due course of time. But we must know for certain that even after the disappearance of the different material bodies\, the soul remains intact eternally. \nFor example\, there are many pots made of earthly clay\, and they are prepared and also broken. But in spite of this\, the earth remains as it is perpetually. Similarly\, the bodies of the soul under different conditions are made and destroyed\, but the spirit soul remains eternally. So there is nothing to lament over. Everyone should understand that this material body is different from the spirit soul\, and so long as one does not come to that understanding\, he is sure to accept the processes of transmigration from one body to another. My dear sister Devaki\, you are so gentle and kind. Please excuse me–don’t be aggrieved by the death of your children\, which I have caused. Actually this was not done by me because all these are predestined activities. One has to act according to the predestined plan\, even unwillingly. People misunderstand that with the end of the body\, the self dies\, or they think that one can kill another living entity. All these misconceptions oblige one to accept the conditions of material existence. In other words\, as long as one is not firmly convinced of the eternality of the soul\, one is subjected to the tribulation of being killer and killed. My dear sister Devaki and brother-in-law Vasudeva\, kindly excuse the atrocities I have committed against you. I am very poor-hearted\, and you are so great-hearted\, so take compassion upon me and excuse me.” \nWhile Kamsa was speaking to his brother-in-law and sister\, tears flowed from his eyes and he fell down at their feet. Believing the words of Durga-devi\, whom he had tried to kill\, Kamsa immediately released his brother-in-law and sister. He personally unlocked the iron shackles and very sympathetically showed his friendship\, just like a family member. \nWhen Devaki saw her brother so repentant\, she also became pacified and forgot all his atrocious activities against her children. Vasudeva also\, forgetting all past incidents\, spoke smilingly with his brother-in-law. Vasudeva told Kamsa\, “My dear fortunate brother-in-law\, what you are saying about the material body and the soul is correct. Every living entity is born ignorant\, understanding this material body to be his self. This conception of life is due to ignorance\, and on the basis of this ignorance we create enmity or friendship. Lamentation\, jubilation\, fearfulness\, envy\, greed\, illusion and madness are different features of our material concept of life. A person influenced like this engages in enmity due only to the material body. Being engaged in such activities\, we forget our eternal relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead.” \nVasudeva took the opportunity of Kamsa’s benevolence and informed him that his atheistic activities were also due to this misconception of life–namely taking the material body to be the self. When Vasudeva talked with Kamsa in such an illuminating way\, Kamsa became very pleased\, and his guilt for killing his nephews subdued. With the permission of his sister Devaki and brother-in-law Vasudeva\, he returned to his home with a relieved mind. \nBut the next day Kamsa called all his counselors together and narrated to them all the incidents that had happened the night before. All the counselors of Kamsa were demons and eternal enemies of the demigods\, so they became depressed upon hearing their master speak of the night’s events. And although they were not very much experienced or learned\, they began to give instructions to Kamsa as follows: “Dear sir\, let us now make arrangements to kill all children who were born within the last ten days in all towns\, countries\, villages and pasturing grounds. Let us execute this plan indiscriminately. We think that the demigods cannot do anything against us if we perform these atrocities. They are always afraid of fighting with us\, and even if they wish to check our activities\, they will not dare to do so. Because of the immeasurable strength of your bow\, they fear you. Indeed\, we have practical experience that whenever you stood to fight with them and began to shower your arrows on them\, they immediately begin to flee in all directions just to save their lives. \nMany of the demigods were unable to fight with you\, and they immediately surrendered themselves unto you by opening their turbans and the flag on their heads. With folded hands they begged you to spare them and said\, ‘My lord\, we are all afraid of your strength. Please release us from this dangerous fight.’ We have also seen many times that you would never kill such surrendered fighters when they were all fearful\, their bows\, arrows and chariots broken\, forgetful of their military activities and unable to fight with you. So actually we have nothing to fear from these demigods. They are very proud of being great fighters in peacetime outside of the warfield\, but actually they cannot show any talent or military power on the warfield. Although Lord Visnu\, Lord Siva and Lord Brahma are always ready to help the demigods headed by Indra\, we have no reason to be afraid of them. As far as Lord Visnu is concerned\, He has already hidden Himself within the hearts of all living entities\, and He cannot come out. As far as Lord Siva is concerned\, he has renounced all activities; he has already entered into the forest. And Lord Brahma is always engaged in different types of austerities and meditation. And what to speak of Indra–he is a straw in comparison to your strength. Therefore we have nothing to fear from all these demigods. But we must not neglect them beause the demigods are our determined enemies. We must be careful to protect ourselves. To root them out from their very existence\, we should just engage ourselves in your service and be always ready for your command.” \nThe demons continued to say: “If there is some disease in the body which is neglected\, it becomes incurable. Similarly\, when one is not careful about restraining the senses and lets them loose\, it is then very difficult to control them at all. Therefore\, we must always be very careful of the demigods before they get too strong to be subdued. The foundation of strength of the demigods is Lord Visnu\, because the ultimate goal of all religious principles is to satisfy Him. The Vedic injunctions\, the brahmanas\, the cows\, austerities\, sacrifices\, performances of charity and distribution of wealth are all for the satisfaction of Lord Visnu. So let us immediately begin by killing all the brahmanas who are in charge of the Vedic knowledge and the great sages who are in charge of sacrificial ritualistic performances. Let us kill all the cows which are the source of butter which is so necessary for performing sacrifices. Please give us your permission to kill all these creatures.” \nActually the limbs of the transcendental body of Lord Visnu are the brahmanas\, the cows\, Vedic knowledge\, austerity\, truthfulness\, sense and mind control\, faithfulness\, charity\, tolerance and performance of sacrifices. Lord Visnu is situated in everyone’s heart and is the leader of all demigods\, including Lord Siva and Lord Brahma. “We think that to kill Lord Visnu is to persecute the great sages and brahmanas\,” said the ministers. \nThus being advised by the demoniac ministers\, Kamsa\, who was from the very beginning the greatest rascal\, decided to persecute the brahmanas and Vaisnavas\, being entrapped by the shackles of all-devouring\, eternal time. He ordered the demons to harass all kinds of saintly persons\, and then he entered his house. The adherents of Kamsa were all influenced by the modes of passion as well as illusioned by the modes of ignorance\, and their only business was to create enmity with saintly persons. Such activities can only reduce the duration of life. The demons accelerated the process and invited their deaths as soon as possible. The result of persecuting saintly persons is not only untimely death. The act is so offensive that the actor also gradually loses his beauty\, his fame and his religious principles\, and his promotion to higher planets is also checked. Driven by various kinds of mental concoctions\, the demons diminish all kinds of welfare. An offense at the lotus feet of the devotees and brahmanas is a greater offense than that committed at the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Thus a godless civilization becomes the source of all calamities. \nThus ends the Bhaktivedanta purport of the Fourth Chapter of Krsna\, “Kamsa Begins His Persecutions.”

SUMMARY:Nandotsava 5th Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:The festival observed by Nanda Maharaja\, Lord Krsna’s father\, to celebrate Lord Krsna’s appearance. \nThe Nandotsav – Birth ceremony of Lord Sri Krishna Taken from Srimad Bhagavatam 10th Canto\, 5th Chapter\, translated by H.D.G. Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. \nAs described in this chapter\, Nanda Maharaja very gorgeously performed the birth ceremony for his newborn child. Then he went to Kamsa to pay taxes due and met his intimate friend Vasudeva. \nThere was great jubilation all over Vrindavana due to Krishna’s birth. Everyone was overwhelmed with joy. Therefore the King of Vraja\, Maharaja Nanda\, wanted to perform the birth ceremony for his child\, and this he did. During this great festival\, Nanda Maharaja gave in charity to all present whatever they desired. After the festival\, Nanda Maharaja put the cowherd men in charge of protecting Gokula\, and then he went to Mathura to pay official taxes to Kamsa. In Mathura\, Nanda Maharaja met Vasudeva. Nanda Maharaja and Vasudeva were brothers\, and Vasudeva praised Nanda Maharaja’s good fortune because he knew that Krishna had accepted Nanda Maharaja as His father. When Vasudeva inquired from Nanda Maharaja about the welfare of the child\, Nanda Maharaja informed him all about Vrindavana\, and Vasudeva was very much satisfied by this\, although he expressed his grief because Devaki’s many children had been killed by Kamsa. Nanda Maharaja consoled Vasudeva by saying that everything happens according to destiny and that one who knows this is not aggrieved. Expecting many disturbances in Gokula\, Vasudeva then advised Nanda Maharaja not to wait in Mathura\, but to return to Vrindavana as soon as possible. Thus Nanda Maharaja took leave of Vasudeva and returned to Vrindavana with the other cowherd men on their bullock carts.

SUMMARY:Annada Ekadashi 9th Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:Sri Yudhisthira Maharaja said\, “Oh JanArdana\, protector of allliving entities\, please tell me the name of the Ekadasi that occursduring the dark fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada (August-September).” \nThe Supreme Lord\, Shri Krishna\, then replied\, “Oh King\, hear meattentively. The name of this sin-removing\, sacred Ekadasi is Aja. Any personwho fasts completely on this day and worships Hrishikesha\, the master of thesenses\, becomes free of all reactions to his sins. Even one who simplyhears about this Ekadasi is freed from his past sins. Oh King\, there is nobetter day than this in all the earthly and heavenly worlds. This is truewithout a doubt. \n“There once lived a famous king named Harishchandra\, who was theemperor of the world and a person of great truth and integrity. His wife’sname was Chandramati\, and he had a son named LohitAshva. By the force ofdestiny\, however\, Harishchandra lost his great kingdom and sold his wife andson. The pious king himself became a menial servant of a dog-eater\, who madehim guard a crematorium. Yet even while doing such menial service\, hedid not forsake his truthfulness and good character\, just as soma-rasa\,even when mixed with some other liquid\, does not lose its ability tobestow immortality. \n“The king passed many years in this condition. Then one day hesadly thought\, ‘What shall I do? Where shall I go? How can I be deliveredfrom this plight?’ In this way he drowned in an ocean of anxiety andsorrow. \n“One day a great sage happened by\, and when the king saw him hehappily thought\, ‘Ah\, Lord Brahma has created brahmins just to helpothers.’ Harishchandra paid his respectful obeisances to the sage\, whosename was Gautama Muni. With joined palms the king stood before Gautama Muniand narrated his pitiful story. Gautama Muni was astonished to hear theking’s tale of woe. He thought\, ‘How has this mighty king been reducedto collecting clothes from the dead?’ Gautama Muni became verymuch compassionate toward Harishchandra and instructed him on theprocess of fasting for purification. \n“Gautama Muni said\, ‘Oh king\, during the dark fortnight of themonth of Bhadrapada there occurs an especially meritorious Ekadasi namedAjA (Annada)\,which removes all sins. Indeed\, this Ekadasi is so auspicious that if you simply fast on that day and perform no other austerity\,all your sins will be nullified. By your good fortune it is coming in justseven days. So I urge you to fast on this day and remain awake throughthe night. If you do so\, all the reactions of your past sins will come to anend. Oh Harishchandra\, I have come here because of your past pious deeds.Now\, all good fortune to you in the future!’ So saying\, the great sage SriGautama Muni immediately disappeared for their vision. \n“King Harishchandra followed Gautama Muni’s instructions concerningfasting on the sacred day of AjA Ekadasi. Oh Maharaja Yudhisthira\, becausethe king fasted on that day\, the reactions to his previous sins werecompletely destroyed at once. Oh lion among kings\, just see the influence ofthis Ekadasi fast! It immediately vanquishes whatever miseries one maybe suffering as a result of past karmik sinful activities. \nThus all Harishchandra’s miseries were relieved. Just by the powerof this wonderful Ekadasi\, he was reunited with his wife and son\, who haddied but were now revived. In the heavenly regions the devas (demigods)began beating on their celestial kettledrums and showering down flowers upon Harishchandra\, his queen\, and their son. By the blessings of the Ekadasi fast\, he regained his kingdom without difficulty. Moreover\, whenKing Harishchandra left the planet\, his relatives and all his subjectstoo\, went with him to the spiritual world. \n“Oh Pandava\, whoever fasts on Aja Ekadasi is surely freed from allhis sins and ascends to the spiritual world. And whosoever hears and studiesthe glories of this Ekadasi achieves the merit gained by performing ahorse sacrifice.”

SUMMARY:Srimati Sita Thakurani Appearance Day 16th Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:Sita Thakurani lived in Santipura as the eternal wife of Sri Advaita Acarya Prabhu. She was always absorbed in vatsalya-prema (paternal love) for Sri Gaurasundara. Just after Sri Caitanya’s appearance\, Sita Thakurani came to Mayapur. She brought a basket full of dresses\, ornaments\, silken children’s clothes\, jeweled necklaces\, and tiger nails set in gold. To worship the golden baby she also brought auspicious articles such as fresh grass\, tumeric\, kum kum\, sandalwood. The wonderful name “Nimai” was given to the Lord by Sita Thakurani. \nIn Krishna lila\, Sita Thakurani is Yogamaya or also Paurnamasi. At Krishna’s birth ceremony she gave many instructions about child care to Nanda and Yasoda. Similarly\, in Gaura lila Sita Thakurani would often help Sacimata nurture baby Nimai. Sita Thakurani and Saci Mata were of one mind; their life and soul was Nimai. Because of Sita Thakurani’s pure parental love\, Saci Mata often chose her as the first person to worship Nimai Pandit during any auspicious ceremony. \nLater Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Nityananda Prabhu often came to Santipur to visit Advaita Acarya and Sita Thakurani. They would collect all the neighbors and hold an uproarious festival of Krishna nama-lila kirtana extending late into the night. When Lord Caitanya moved to Jagannatha Puri Advaita Prabhu and Sita Thakurani would regularly visit Him. \nSita Thakurani would cook Mahaprabhu’s favorite foods and offer lunch to the Lord. Sita Thakurani loved Lord Caitanya as a son and He loved her as His mother.

SUMMARY:Parsva Ekadashi 22nd Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:Parsva Ekadasi occurs in the month of Asvina when the Moon is waxing\, and is also known as Vamana Ekadasi. In the Brahma-vaivarta Purana\, Sri Krsna and Maharaja Yudhistira discuss the illimatable glories of this special day.Maharaja Yudhistira asked Sri Krsna “What is the name of the Ekadasi that takes place during the waxing moon in the month of Asvina? How should one make a proper job of observing this Ekadasi vrata and what merit is to be obtained by it? Please explain to me all these in details.” \nSri Krsna replied. “O King\, the glories of this day are immeasurably great\, it awards liberation and revives one’s desire. This Ekadasi is also known as Vamana Ekadasi due to the Lords appearance as Vamana deva at this time. It is also known as Parsva Parivartini Ekadasi (“changing sides”) Ekadasi.” \nMaharaja Yudhistira enquired\, “O sweet Janardana! In spite of hearing your description I still have some doubts. O King how do you sleep and how do you change sides? What procedure can be carried out for fulfilling the Caturmasya Vrata. What should people do when you are sleeping? Why did you bind Bali Maharaj in your impenetrable way? This I am unable to understand? Why is this? \nSri Krsna replied: My dear Yudhistira\, there was no reason for the appearance of Vamana deva in particular\, nevertheless his appearance was most auspicious what with his being the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Your doubts will be removed in good time when you have finished hearing this description of Ekadasi and your mind is pacified by it’s observance. \n“O lion like King! In Treta-yuga there was a great devotee known as Bali Maharaj\, he was born in a demoniac family\, yet he still became a most sublime devotee. This is almost unheard of! By his regular worship of me by offering a whole variety of sweet and sincere prayers I became most satisfied. His benign service unto me was of a most high calibre and I became very pleased simply by hearing his words. He also worshipped many brahmanas and performed sacrifice. Soon he became so prominent he defeated Indra and\, the King of heaven\, and conquered the heavenly planet. Then Indra approached me and offered beautiful prayers in harmony with the desires of the personality of Godhead. By their prayer I assumed the form of a dwarf (Vamana) and went to the sacrificial arena of Bali in the garb of a brahmacari. \n“Upon asking Bali for three steps of land I grew very ashamed of myself and only when I desired something more than these three steps did I feel at ease. Vamana deva thus proceeded to take three steps\, the first step covered the lower planetary systems and the second extended beyond the limited confines of the material universe. The third step he happily placed on my head and I grew to be most ecstatic. Being fully satisfied by the Lords humility he was more than kind enough to do this and I blessed him by living constantly with him. \n“On the day of this Ekadasi which occurs during the waxing moon of Asvina. A beautiful and most acutely aware deity of Vamana deva was installed in the residence of King Bali. Another form of mine has been established in the bed of Ananta Sesa in the ocean of milk. The Supreme Lord sleeps for four months beginning from Sayana Ekadasi up to Utthana Ekadasi. One should offer special worship to the Lord with selfish motivation. He should properly observe each and every Ekadasi and by observance in this way one obtains the result of performing one thousand horse sacrifices.

SUMMARY:Lord Vamanadeva Appearance Day 23rd Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:Lord Vamanadeva appeared within this world from the womb of Aditi\, the mother of the gods. He appeared at midday on the shravan-dvadasi\, the 12th day of the lunar month of Shravan when the moon is waxing. \nThere are many lessons for Vaishnavas to learn from the narration of His activities\, as found in the 8th canto\, 18th chapter of the Bhagavat Purana (Srimad Bhagavatam). Amongst the lessons are these: \n1. That God comes to this world in many forms; not just once\, in one form\, or even many times in the same form\, but many times in many forms. He is never limited by the form\, but remains all powerful. \n2. That all other gods are meant to offer homage to Him. They did this when\, appearing as a young child\, he was awarded the sacred thread by Brihaspati\, the guru of the gods. The sun god gave Him the Gayatri mantra and His father\, Kasyapa Muni\, a straw belt. Mother Earth gave Him a deerskin and Lord Brahma gave Him a waterpot. Kuvera\, the heavenly treasurer gave Him a monk’s begging bowl\, and the wife of Lord Shiva gave Him the first alms. In this way\, the gods all offered the best of what they had to the Supreme God. Each of us\, in our own way\, must also give the best of what we own – our talents\, intelligence\, words and wealth – as a gift to that same God. He gave it to us along with our birth\, and we can offer ot back to Him. \n3. Upon seeing the lad from a distance\, King Bali noticed his remarkable sun-like effulgence. He welcomed Him and washed His feet. Thinking of himself as a great proprietor of the Earth\, Bali then asked Vamanadeva what He would like to be given in charity\, as this was the custom of the king. Vamana replied that He only wanted three paces of land\, as measured by His own short steps. The king smiled at the thought of such a small request. He was soon to discover that just as God comes in disguise\, so His requests to us are often disguised as simple acts of devotion. Many people smile at the thought that God asks us for only three words: Hare\, Krishna\, and Rama\, spoken as a mantra. But as we speak those three small words we begin to realise that He is changing our life forever from within our hearts. \n4.Vamanadeva teaches Bali that enlightened human beings are meant to be satisfied with what comes to them. Those who are not satisfied with what they actually need will never be satisfied\, even if they gain the whole Earth. And a man or a woman practising the spiritual life must never be dissatisfied\, for by such dissatisfaction they sprinkle water on the inner fire of their spiritual potency. \n5. Bali Maharaja’s guru\, Sukracarya. was perceptive enough to understand what was happening\, who the young boy was\, and what was about to happen. But he counselled the king to deny the request\, even though he knew that it was Vishnu Himself asking. Thus Sukra was an atheist\, even though learned in the Vedas. Such a guru\, who stands in the way of his disciple’s emancipation\, is fit to be rejected. \n6. Bali turns to his guru and says that telling lies\, or not keeping a promise once spoken\, is the most sinful act. He explains that Mother Earth once said: ” I can bear any heavy thing except a person who is a liar.” Therefore\, a person living according to dharma must scrupulously avoid lying. \n7. He explains that the opportunity to give in charity to a qualified\, saintly person is very rare. It must never be regarded as a time of loss\, but as a moment when auspiciousness is drawn towards the giver. When we give we don’t lose\, rather God – and the universe – gives us even more in return. \n8. Sukra curses his own disciple\, thus revealing the actual relationship that sometimes exists between an official religious priest and a member of the faith. \nBali surrenders to Vamanadeva \n9. Vamana responds to Bali’s promise by expanding his size. Although God may appear as a child\, He is the oldest of the old\, the immeasurably largest of all large things\, and the most powerful of all. This lesson would later be learned by Lord Brahma\, who tested the Lord’s power when He appeared as child Krishna. God is also the ultimate owner of everything since everything emanates from Him. \n10. Vamana takes His first two steps which\, due to His size\, encompass the entire cosmos. When He asks where He should place his third promised step\, Bali realises that there is only one thing left to give Him – his very self. The king surrenders fully to God at that moment. The surrender of Bali\, although offered in a moment of abject desperation\, is nonetheless to be emulated by all of us. We don’t own countries\, but we do regard ourselves as proprietors of our domestic domains. Most of these\, in truth\, never quite belong to us legally\, and in the grand scheme of things we can claim no factual ownership at all. Death will come very quickly and take everything away from us\, so better to give it all to God now. We do this by dedicating everything we own to His service. The result? Curiously enough\, the same result that Bali achieved: that we are given everything back and that God draws us nearer to Him and His eternal abode

SUMMARY:Appearance Day of Srila Jiva Goswami 23rd Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:Sri Sanatana\, Sri Rupa and Sri Vallabha were three brothers\, all employed in the service of the Badsa Hussain Shah. Amongst the three\, there was only one descendent\, Sri Jiva. Having been rewarded richly by the Badsa for their sevices\, their household life was very opulent. \nThere was nothing lacking in whatever was necessary for the upbringing of the only son. The house was illuminated by the effulgence of the child’s golden complexion; his eyes were like the expanded petals of the lotus; every part of his body was graced with a lusterous\, radiant splendor. When Sri Gaurasundara came to Ramakeli\, Sri Jiva was blessed by having darshana of His worshipable lord\, though he was just a baby at the time. Placing the dust of His lotus feet on the child’s head\, Mahaprabhu indicated him to be the future sovereign preceptor of the Gaudiya sampradaya. Though he was only a child\, Sri Jiva kept the form of the Lord\, which fascinates all the world\, within his heart. As he grew up\, while eating\, lying down\, in his dreams\, while he was awake\, at all times\, he would meditate on that form. \nLater on\, when his father and uncles renounced their family life in order to be with Mahaprabhu\, the only child\, Sri Jiva\, was left with his mother in the family palace at Fateyabad. Lying in her lap\, which was wet with tears of separation\, he gradually began to grow as the waxing moon. Seeing that the mother and the child’s face were always wet with tears\, their friends also fell under the shadow of sadness and only with great difficulty managed to assuage their grief. Whenever Sri Jiva would remember his father and uncles\, or the lotus feet of Sri Gaura Hari\, he would lose consiousness and fall to the ground. \nAs he got a little older\, Sri Jiva took up the worship of the Deities of Sri-Sri Rama-Krsna. He would carefully decorate Them and offer bhoga and arati\, serving Them with his full attention. Even in his play\, whatever games he played were connected with Sri krsna’s pastimes. \nWhile studying under the local panditas he became proficent in grammar\, poetry and rhetoric. Noting his great intellect\, his teachers commented\, “Such brilliance is not often found in a child so young as this. No doubt he will be a very high-souled\, saintly person.” \nEven while engaged in his studies Jiva always thought of Sri Sri Nitai-Gauranga. Once he saw in a dream that Sri Rama-Krsna had taken the forms of Nitai-Gauranga and were dancing. [B.R.1.732] Giving him the dust of Their lotus feet\, the Two Lords then disappeared. Having seen such a wonderful dream\, Sri Jiva was consoled somewhat. Then he began to think\, “When will I be able to crawl out of this well of family life and devote my full time and energy\, my very self\, to serving these two most magnanimous Lords?” But he was the only son of the family. Only in his company could his mother forget somewhat the pangs of separation in her heart. When Sri Jiva learned that his father had given up his life on the banks of the Ganga\, he was compeletely unsettled. After that his eyes were never dry. The family members and friends tried to console him but to little avail. Family life had become the source of his utter sadness. \nSomeone suggested to Jiva to go to Navadwipa and bathe himself in the coolness emanating from the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda Prabhu so that his mind and body\, burning with with grief\, could be refreshed. Thus Sri Jiva set our for Navadwipa with a group of pilgrims. [B.R.1/741]\nNityananda Prabhu\, the omniscient Lord\, could understand that Sri Jiva was on his way to Navadwipa. Therefore He also left for there from Khardaha. After a few days\, Jiva arrived at Navadwipa. Seeing the beauty of that place he was charmed. Falling down on the ground\, he offered his dandavats to Mother Ganges. Inquiring from the villagers the directions to Mayapura\, he learned that Nityananda Prabhu was residing at Srivasa Pandita’s house. At last arriving there\, he fell down at the door to offer his dandavats. Nityananda Prabhu came out with Srivasa Pandita and picked him up and embraced him\, asking\, “Are you the nephew of Sri Rupa and Sri Sanatana?” \nAs an answer\, Jiva again fell down on the ground at the lotus feet of Nityananda Prabhu. This time Nityananda Prabhu brought him in the house and began to inquire after the welfare of his family at Fateyabad. Then Sri Jiva was introduced to the devotees present in Navadwipa; he offered his salutations at their lotusfeet. Everyone was very happy to meet the nephew of Sri Rupa and Sanatana. That day Sri Jiva received the remnants of Nityananda prabhu’s prasadam. \nThe next day\, the two of them came to Saci Mata’a house. Seeing the birthplace of Sri Gaurasundara\, which was filled with such splendor\, Sri Jiva was greatly pacified and fell down on the ground to roll in the dust. In the large courtyard the devotees were singing songs praising the glories of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Seeing Nityananda Prabhu\, everyone stood up and then fell down\, offering their dandavats at His lotus feet. Then Jiva saw Saci Mata sitting on the veranda. \nDressed in white with silk chadder around her shoulders she looked radiant\, the white of her hair blending with her white sari. Though her body trembled with old age and was very thin\, still the courtyard was illuminated by her divine effulgence. Forgetting herself in rememberance of Sri Gaursundara\, she was sitting with her eyes closed. Becoming aware that Nityananda Prabhu had arrived\, she covered her head with her sari and called her servant. “Isana! Srpada has arrived. Please wash His feet.” \nAfter this was done\, Nityananda offered namaskar to the mother of the Supreme Lord and took His seat. He then introduced Sri Jiva to her. Saci Mata placed her hand on his head to bless him\, and Sri Jiva floated in the ocean of happiness. Saci Mata then requested the two of them to honor the Lord’s prasada. “Take prasada here at your mother’s house today\, my child. I offered there preparations in secret to Sri Gaurcandra.” \nSri Jiva spent some days with Nityananda Prabhu\, touring the nine islands of Navadwipa\, in order to have darsana of the holy places of the Lord’s pastimes there. Then\, as ordered by Nityananda Prabhu\, he set out for Kasi (Varanasi) . At Kasi he studied Vedanta under Sri Madhusudana Vacaspati\, a disciple of Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya. The conclusions of Vedanta contained in Srimad-Bhagavatam that were expounded by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya in Puri had been in turn taught by the Bhattacarya to Madhusudana Vacaspati\, who established a toll at Kasi. From him\, Sri Jiva mastered the same conclusions. \nFrom here Sri Jiva set out for Sri Vrindavana where he received shelter at the lotus feet of his two uncles. Sri Rupa and Sanatana. They were very pleased to see him and received from him all the news. Jiva stayed with Sri Rupa\, who began to teach him Srimad Bhagavatam. After initiating him with the divine mantra\, Rupa engaged him in the service of Sri Sri Radha-Damodara. According to Sadhana dipika\, this Deity of Damodara was fashioned by Rupa Gosvami’s own hand for his dear disciple Sri Jiva. Sri Sri Radha-Damodara are presently being worshipped in Jaipur\, Rajasthan. \nSeeing that Jiva had quickly become conversant with the conclusion of the Srimad Bhagavatam\, Sri Rupa engaged him in proof-reading his Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu. At this time Sri Jiva compiled a commentary on Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu called Durgama sangamani. In the year 1476 (Sakabda) Sri Sanatana Gosvami compiled Sri Vaisnava tosani\, a commentary on the tenth canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam\, which he gave to Sri Jiva for proof reading. Under the order of Sri Sanatana\, Sri Jiva compiled a commentary on that named Laghu Vaisnava tosani in the year 1500 (Sakabda). His writings\, along with those of Sri Rupa and Sri Sanatana\, Sri Gopal Bhatta\, Sri Raghunatha Bhatta\, Sri Raghunath das\, Sri Krsna das\, Sri Kasisvar Pandit\, and Sri Madhu Pandit\, completely captivated the learned men of that time. It was the beginning of a golden age at Sri Vraja dhama. \nSri Jiva regurlarly brought water for Sri Rupa and Sanatana’s bath. He massaged their heads with oil\, cleaned their ashram\, worship the Deity\, cooked and corrected manuscripts. \nAfter the disappearance of Sri Rupa and Sanatana\, Sri Jiva continued the tradition that they had inaugerated. Once Sri Jiva travelled to Agra to debate with the Rajputs concerning the glories of Jamuna and Ganga rivers. He established that the Jamuna is more glorious than the Ganga as the Ganga emanates from Krsna’s lotus feet whereas the Jamuna is His own consort. At this the Moghul emperor was very much satisfied and wanted to present him something. Sri Jiva replied that he would accept some blank papers. So the emperor presented Jiva some stained paper. (At that time paper was very rare and most manuscripts were usually composed on leaves.) \nThere is also a legend that once\, when a moghul emperor (possibly Akbar) wanted to confer something on the Goswamis of Vrindavana\, they requested a farman (emperor’s order) that no living beings would be killed within Vraja. As a result of this no king would come to hunt there anymore. \nThe disciple of Lokanatha Gosvami\, Narottama dasa Thakura Mahasaya\, Sri Gopala Bhatta Gosvami’s disciple Srinivasa Acarya Prabhu\, and the disciple of Hrdaya Caitanya Prabhu\, Sri Syamananda Prabhu\, were greatly favored by Srila Jiva Goswami. Under his tutelage they studied all the literatures of the Gosvamis. Later he sent them to preach this knowledge in Bengal. \nSrila Jiva Gosvami composed many literatures\, amongst them: \nHarinamamrta-vyakarana\nSutra-malika\nRasamrta-sesa\nGopala-virudavali\nSri-Madhava-mahotsava\nSri-Sankalpa-kalpavrksa\nBrahma-Samhita-tika\nBhakti-rasamrta-sindhu-tika (Durgama-sangamani)\nUjjvala-nilamani-tika (Locana-rocani)\nGopala-campu\nSat-sandharbha (Tattva-sandarbha\, Bhagavata-sandarbha\, Paramatma sandarbha\, Krsna-sandarbha\, Bhakti-sandharbha\, Priti-sandarbha)\nSrimad-Bhagavata-tika (Krama-sandarbha)\nLaghu-vaisnava-tosani (Tenth Canto Bhagavatam commentary)\nSarva-sambadina (commentary on Sat-sandarbha)\nGopala-tapani-tika (Sri-Suhkha-bodhini)\nPadma-puranastha-yogasara-stotra-tika\nGayatri-vyakhya-vivrti (A commentary on the Gayatri mantra as described in the Agni Purana\, chapters 216-217)\nRadha-Krsnarcana-candrika\nDhatu-sangraha\nBhavartha-sucaka-campu \nBirth: 1533 (Christian calendar)\, 1455 (Sakabdha)\, 12th day of the bright fortnight in the month of Bhadra.\nDisappearance : 1540 (Sakabdha)\, 3rd day of bright fortnight\, Pausa\nAge: 85 years

SUMMARY:Ananta Caturdasi Vrata : Appearance Day of Padmanabha 25th Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:There are no indications that Gaudiya Vaisnavas perform any extra functions or austerities for this vrata. \nThe fourteenth day in the bright fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada is known as anantana vrata. The Lord Ananta Padmanabha is invoked in a pot filled with water and decorated with coconut and flowers. Special puja is celebrated with fourteen varieties of dishes. \nOf all the vratas assigned to caturdasi\, the Anantacaturdasi-vrata (Bhadrapada sukla caturdasi) seems to be the most important and widely observed. It is also called ‘Anantapadmanabha-vrata’. SUMMARY:Disappearance Day of Srila Haridasa Thakura 25th Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:Sri Haridas Thakur appeared in this world in the village of Buron\, in the present district of Sat-kira\, which was previously a sub-division of Khulna\, Bangladesh. By this great fortune that land has been blessed\, in that the chanting of the Holy Names of Hari-Nam Sankirtan\, became revealed there. After remaining there for some time\, he came to the banks of Ganga at Fulia\, near Santipur. Advaita Acarya was overjoyed to get his association and roared very loudly. The two of them thus began to float in the waves of the mellows of pastimes of Sri Krsna – Govinda. [C. B. Adi 16.18]\nSri Haridas Thakur is an eternally liberated associate of the Lord. The associates of the Lord are worshipable wherever they make their appearance. Just as Garuda appeared as a bird\, and Hanuman as a monkey\, Haridas Thakur appeared in a family of Yavanas (Mohammedans). From his very birth he was very deeply devoted to the Holy Names of Sri Krsna. \nWhen he came to live by the banks of the Ganges\, Advaita Acarya was very happy to get his association. The brahmana residents of Fulia were very pleased to see how he worshipped the Holy Name\, and they used to come everyday to have his darshan. Gradually word began to spread of his glories. When the Mohammedan administrator came to know of all this he began to burn with malice and went to the local Mohammedan king to inform him\, “Though he is Mohammedan\, he behaves as a Hindu\, are therefore he should be brought here for trial.” Hearing the words of that sinful man\, the local king who was also very sinful\, had Hari das Thakur brought there immediately. [C. B. Adi 16.37]. \nThe Mohammedan King told Haridas\, “Just give up this chanting and say the Kalma (prayer of the Mohammedans).” \nHaridasa Thakura replied\, “The Supreme Lord is one\, though His names might be different. The Hindu shastras are the Puranas and the Muslim sastra is the Koran. Everyone acts as he is inspired by the Lord\, as also do I. Some yavanas become Hindus and some Hindus become yavanas\, to worship the Lord. O Maharaja\, you can now judge me.” \nHearing these words the Kazi replied that it would be necessary to punish him. Hearing the decree of the Kazi\, the Muluk pati addressed Haridasa\, “My brother\, just follow your own religion. Then you will have nothing to worry about. Otherwise you will have to be punished.” \nIn reply to this Haridasa Thakura exclaimed\, “Even if you cut my body into pieces\, I will never give up the chanting of Hari nama.” [C. B. Adi 6.94]\nAfter hearing these words of Haridasa spoken with great determination\, the Kazi declared\, “He should be beaten in twenty two market places. If he doesn’t die after this\, then I will know that the learned gentleman speaks the truth.” \nThus having heard the words of the Kazi\, the sinful Muluk pati then ordered that Haridasa Thakura be beaten in twenty two market places. Haridasa remembered the Lord by chanting “Krsna Krsna”\, and in the happiness of that remembrance\, he didn’t feel any bodily inconvenience. [C. B. Adi 16.102]. \nAs the demoniac associates of Hiranyakasipu tried in so many ways to kill Sri Prahlada Maharaja\, but were unsuccessful\, similarly the demoniac Mohammedans\, though they tried to harm Haridasa Thakura\, were unable to do so. Haridasa Thakur was immersed in the nectar of the Name and thus gradually the Mohammedans could understand that he wasn’t an ordinary person. \nThus they humbly submitted to the Thakura\, “Haridasa! We can understand that you are a genuine saintly person. No one can do anything to you. But the Mulukpati won’t understand any of this. Rather he will have our heads.” Hearing their frightened please Haridasa’s external consciousness ceased and he entered into deep meditation on the Lord’s Holy Name. \nThen the Mohammedans carried his body on their shoulders to the Mulukpati\, who surmised that he was dead. Thinking as such he ordered that his body be thrown in the Ganga. Haridasa’s body floated down the Ganga until he reached Fulia ghat\, where he got out of the water and began to loudly chant Hari Nama. Seeing the greatness of Haridasa Thakura\, the Mulukpati became fearful. Along with the other Mohammedans he came there and begged Haridas Thakur to forgive him for his offence. \nConsidering him to be a holy man\, they all offered their salutations and thus were delivered from their offences. Having witnessed the pastimes of the Thakura the devotees were in ecstasy. \nHaridasa Thakur used to chant Hari Nama in a hollowed out cave like hole at the base of a tree. This “cave” still exists near Fulia\, on the banks of the Ganga. One can get there by train from Santipura. Within the roots of this tree also lived a poisonous snake. Being fearful of this snake the devotees couldn’t remain there for very long and one day they mentioned to the Thakura about this snake which was worrying them. Seeing the distress of the devotees Haridasa Thakur called to that snake and spoke to him\, “My dear sir\, if in fact you are residing here\, then I am requesting that you please leave by tomorrow\, otherwise I myself will definitely leave here.” \nHearing these words of the Thakura\, that snake immediately came out of its hole and after offering namaskar to the Thakura\, it went elsewhere. Seeing this pastime\, the devotees were struck with wonder and they developed profound and deep devotion for Haridasa Thakura. \nOne time Haridasa Thakura came to a village within Jessore district named Harinodegram\, which was predominantly inhabited by brahmanas. One day during a religious discussion one puffed brahmana approached Haridasa Thakura and remarked\, “O Haridasa! Why do you chant the holy name loudly? In the scriptures it is recommended to chant within the mind.” In reply Haridasa Thakura told him\, “The birds\, beasts and insects cannot chant themselves\, but if they get to hear Hari Nama then they also become delivered. If one chants only to himself then he delivers only himself\, but if one chants loudly\, the benefit is a hundred times greater. This is the conclusion of the scriptures.” [C. B. Adi 16.180]\nHearing this objective statement of Haridasa Thakura that sinful brahmana couldn’t tolerate it and exclaimed\, “In Kali yuga sudras will recite the shastras\, now I am seeing this with my own eyes.” In answer to this personal insult delivered by that miscreant brahmana\, Haridasa Thakura simply silently walked out of that assembly. Within a few days that brahmana contracted ulcerous leprosy. The result of Vaishnava aparadha became immediately manifest. In Kali yuga\, Raksasas take birth in brahmana families in order to give trouble to the honest\, virtuous people. [C.B. Adi 16.300]\nAnother time\, Haridasa desired to have darshan of the Vaishnavas of Navadwipa. Everyone there became overwhelmed with ecstasy\, to see Haridasa. Adwaita Acarya loved Haridasa as much as His own life and he would offer the first prasadam to Haridasa Thakura (which is to be offered only to high class brahmanas) after performing Pitr-sraddha (worship of his forefathers). \nHaridasa Thakura lived for some time at Benapol\, which was within Jessore district. Every day and night he would chant three hundred thousand Holy Names. At the time\, when Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu displayed His divine opulences by manifesting Himself as the Supreme Personality of Godhead in the courtyard at Srivasa Pandita’s house\, He was calling his dear devotees: “Haridasa! when those Mohammedans were beating you I was ready to destroy them with My Sudarsana Cakra\, but as you were praying for their welfare I was unable to do anything.” [C. B. Madhya 10.42]\nTherefore I accepted their blows on My own body. Just see\, the scars are still here on My body.” Seeing those marks Haridasa fainted in ecstatic love. Regaining his consciousness he began to praise the Lord of his life\, “O Lord Viswambhara\, master of the universe\, please have mercy on this sinner\, who has fallen at Your feet. I have no good qualities and am a vile wretch\, rejected by all classes of men. How can I describe Your divine character?” [C. B. Mad 20.58]\nThakura Haridasa was present during most of the Lord’s pastimes in Nadia\, and when the Lord went to Jagannatha Puri\, Haridasa also went and took up residence there. Everyday\, after attending Lord Jagannath’s mangal arati\, Lord Caitanya would come to see Haridasa Thakura and would bring him some of Lord Jagannath’s prasadam. When Sri Sanatana Goswami and Sri Rupa Goswami would come from Vrindavana to Puri they used to stay with Haridasa Thakura. Haridasa\, in order to maintain the etiquette\, would not go near Lord Jagannatha’s temple but would offer his obeisances to the Cakra on top of the temple\, from a distance. As he was considered to be a Mohammedan by birth\, his presence in the temple would be objectionable to those who were caste conscious. \nMahamaya devi took initiation in the maha-mantra from Haridasa Thakura and Caitanya Mahaprabhu appointed him as the acarya of the Holy Name. His departure from this world\, in the presence of Caitanya Mahaprabhu\, is fully described by Sri Krsna dasa Kaviraja Gosvami in the Antya-lila of Sri Caitanya Caritamrta.

SUMMARY:Srila Visvarupa Mahotsava 26th Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:Today is a very sacred day in our line. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu took sannyasa and began to search for his brother Visvarupa. While searching\, on this day He found out that he was in Pandarapur\, and that he had left his body. He had taken samadhi on the bank of the river Bhima. Then\, on this day\, though Mahaprabhu was observing Caturmasya-vrata very strictly for four months\, He shaved his hair. Before this year\, He never shaved for these four months\, nor did He cut his nails. He observed all the rules and regulations of Caturmasya. \nIt is said that Sankararanya was the sannyasa name of Srila Visvarupa\, who was the elder brother of Visvambhara (the original name of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu). Sankararanya expired in 1432 Sakabda (A.D. 1510) at Sholapur\, where there is a place of pilgrimage known as Pandarapura. This is referred to in the Madhya-lila\, Chapter Nine\, verses 299 and 300. \n(Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita Adi-lila 10:106 purport.) \nVisvarupa was the elder brother of Gaurahari\, Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. When arrangements were being made for the marriage of Visvarupa\, He took sannyasa and left home. He took the sannyasa name of Sankararanya. In 1431 Sakabda Era (A.D. 1509)\, He disappeared in Pandarapura\, in the district of Sholapur. As an incarnation of Sankarshana\, He is both the ingredient and immediate cause of the creation of this material world. \nHe is nondifferent from Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu\, for the amsa and the amsi\, or the part and the whole\, are not different. As an incarnation of Sankarshana\, Visvarupa belongs to the quadruple manifestation of catur-vyuha. In the Gaura-candrodaya it is said that Visvarupa\, after His so-called demise\, remained mixed within Sri Nityananda Prabhu. \n(Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita Adi-lila 13:74 purport.) \nataeva prabhu tanre bale\, ‘bada bhai’\nkrishna\, balarama dui——caitanya\, nitai \nTRANSLATION\nBecause Maha-sankarshana is the ingredient and efficient cause of the cosmic manifestation\, He is present in every detail of it. Lord Caitanya therefore called Him His elder brother. The two brothers are known as Krishna and Balarama in the spiritual world\, but at the present moment they are Caitanya and Nitai. Therefore the conclusion is that Nityananda Prabhu is the original Sankarshana\, Baladeva. \n(Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita Adi-lila 13:78 text and translation.)\nRead Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita Madhya lila 7th chapter. \nsannyasa kari’ visvarupa giyache dakshine\navasya kariba ami tanra anveshane \nTRANSLATION\n“My elder brother\, Visvarupa\, has taken sannyasa and gone to South India. Now I must go search for Him.”\najna deha\, avasya ami dakshine caliba\ntomara ajnate sukhe leuti’ asiba’ \nTRANSLATION\n“Please permit Me to go\, for I must tour South India. With your permission\, I shall soon return very happily.”\nsuni’ sarvabhauma haila atyanta katara\ncarane dhariya kahe vishada-uttara \nTRANSLATION\nUpon hearing this\, Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya became very much agitated. Catching hold of the lotus feet of Caitanya Mahaprabhu\, he gave this sorrowful reply. \nbhattacarya-sange ara yata nija-gana\njagannatha pradakshina kari’ karila gamana \nTRANSLATION\nAccompanied by His personal associates and Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya\, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu circumambulated the altar of Jagannatha. The Lord then departed on His South Indian tour.

SUMMARY:Acceptance of Sannyasa by Srila Prabhupada 26th Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:“One night\, Abhay had an unusual dream. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta appeared before him\, beckoning. He was asking Abhay to leave home and take sannyasa. Abhay awoke in an intensely emotional state\, “How horrible!” He thought. He knew it was not an ordinary dream\, yet the request seemed so difficult and unlikely. Take sannyasa! At least it was not something he could do immediately. Now he had to improve the business\, and with the profits he would print books. He went on with his duties\, but remained shaken by the dream.” (Satwarup Goswami. 1980. Prabhupada Lilamrta. Page 118.) \nIn 1948\, Abhay closed his Lucknow factory. He had fallen behind in employees’ salaries\, and since 1946 he had been paying past rent in installments. But when sales dropped off\, continuing the factory became impossible. He lost everything. \nSrila Prabhupada: I started a big factory in Lucknow. Those were golden days. My business flourished like anything. Everything in the chemical business knew. But then\, gradually\, everything dwindled. \nWith the help of some acquaintances in Allahabad\, he opened a small factory there\, in the same city where his Prayag Pharmacy had failed fifteen years before. He moved to Allahabad with his son Brindaban and continued manufacturing medicines. While the rest of the family remained at Banerjee Lane in Calcutta\, Abhay continued his travelling; but now he was often sway for months at a time. \nAnd then he had the dream a second time. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati appeared before him; again he was beckoning\, indicating that Abhay should take sannyasa. And again Abhay had to put the dream aside. He was a householder with many responsibilities. To take sannyasa would mean to give up everything. He had to earn money. He now had five children. “Why is Guru Maharaj asking me to take sannyasa?” he thought. It is not possible now. \nThe Allahabad business was unsuccessful. “At present\, the condition of our business is not good\,” he wrote his servant Gouranga\, who had asked to rejoin him. “When the condition gets better and if you are free at that time I will call for you.” He worked earnestly\, but results were meagre.\nAs with everything else\, Abhay saw his present circumstances through the eyes of scripture. And he could not help but think of the verse from the Srimad Bhagavatam: \nyasyAham anugrihnriAmi\nharishye tad-dhanaM shanaiH\ntato ‘dhanaM tyajanty asya\nsva-janA duHkha-duHkhitam \n“When I feel especially merciful towards someone\, I gradually take away all his material possessions. His friends and relatives then reject this poverty-stricken and most wretched fellow”. \nHe had heard Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati quote this verse\, and now he thought of it often. He took it that his present circumstances were controlled by Lord Sri Krishna\, who was forcing him into a helpless position\, freeing him for preaching Krishna consciousness. \nSrila Prabhupada: Somehow or other\, my intention for preaching the message of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu increased\, and the other side decreased. I was not disinclined\, but Krishna forced me: “You must give it up.” The history is known – how it decreased\, decreased\, decreased. \nIn the Srimad Bhagavatam\, Queen Kunti had also prayed\, “My dear Lord Krishna\, Your Lordship can easily be approached\, but only by those who are materially exhausted. One who is on the path of (material) progress\, trying to improve himself with respectable parentage\, great opulence\, high education\, and bodily beauty\, cannot approach You with sincere feeling.” \nSrila Prabhupada: So in 1950 I retired\, practically. Not retired\, but a little in touch with business – whatever is going on. Then almost it became nil. Whatever was there\, all right. You do whatever you like. (Satwarup Goswami. 1980. Prabhupada Lilamrta. Pages 140-141.) \nOne night Abhay had a striking dream\, the same dream he had had several times before\, during his days as a householder. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati appeared\, just as Abhay had known him\, the tall\, scholarly sannyasi\, coming directly from the spiritual world\, from Krishna’s personal entourage. He called to Abhay and indicated that he should follow. Repeatedly he called and motioned. He was asking Abhay to take sannyasa. Come\, he urged\, become a sannyasi. \nAbhay awoke in a state of wonder. He thought of this instruction as another feature of the original instruction Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati had given him at their first meeting in Calcutta\, the same instruction that his spiritual master had later solidified in a letter; become an English preacher and spread Krishna consciousness throughout the Western world. Sannyasa was for that end; otherwise\, why would his spiritual master have asked him to accept it? Abhay reasoned that his spiritual master was saying\, “Now take sannyasa and you will actually be able to accomplish this mission. Formerly the time was not right.” \nAbhay deliberated cautiously. By accepting sannyasa\, a Vaishnava dedicates his body\, mind and words totally to the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead\, renouncing all other engagements. He was doing that already. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati had offered sannyasa to his leading disciples so that they could continue his mission; they hadn’t done it. Preaching in the West had proved perilous even for the Gaudiya Math’s most recognised sannyasis. How could he\, a mere householder\, presume he could succeed where the others had failed? He was hesitant. The helpless\, incapable feeling he had expressed in his “Viraha-ashtaka” was there. But now his spiritual master was beckoning him – over all other considerations\, even over natural humility. Now\, although he was elderly and alone\, the desire to preach just as his spiritual master had preached remained within him\, a fierce though sometimes quietly expressed determination. \nThe Vedik standard and the example set by the previous acharyas was that if one wanted to lead a preaching movement\, sannyasa was required. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati had taken sannyasa to facilitate his missionary work. Lord Chaitanya had taken sannyasa to further his sankirtan movement. Of course\, Lord Chaitanya was the Supreme Personality of godhead\, but when His young students had been disrespectful towards Him\, treating Him as an ordinary man\, He had taken sannyasa. Because a sannyasi is automatically respected\, Lord Chaitanya’s acceptance of sannyasa was a calculated tactic; as son as He began travelling throughout India as a sannyasi\, he immediately attracted thousands of followers to the sankirtan movement. \nKnowing that many cheaters would accept the saffron dress and abuse the respect given to sannyasis\, Lord Chaitanya had advised against accepting sannyasa in the Age of Kali-yuga. He knew that cheaters\, in the guise of sadhus\, would act immorally\, accumulate funds for their own sense gratification\, and make many followers simply to enhance their own prestige. Posing as swamis\, they would cheat the public. Because the people in Kali-yuga are unable to follow the rules and regulations of sannyasa\, Lord Chaitanya had recommended that they simply chant Hare Krishna. However\, if a person could actually follow the rules\, and especially if he had to spread the sankirtan movement\, sannyasa was necessary. \nAbhay first had to approach one of his Godbrothers for permission. He decided to turn to Bhaktivilas Tirtha Maharaj (formerly Kunjavihari) the leader of the Chaitanya Math in Calcutta. Abhay still thought of the Caitanya Math as the headquarters of his spiritual master’s mission. During the heated legal disputes\, the Chaitanya Math had been the most prized acquisition\, and since 1948 it had been under the legal ownership of Bhaktivilas Tirtha Maharaj. Now\, although each sannyasi had his own place or places\, the Chaitanya Math and Bhaktivilas Tirtha Maharaj legally represented the Gaudiya Math entity. Abhay felt that if he were to take sannyasa and go preach in America\, he should give the Chaitanya Math the first opportunity to support the work. In April 1959\, Abhay wrote to Tirtha Maharaj\, inquiring about sannyasa as well as about the Chaitanya Math’s printing some of his manuscripts. And since no one was going abroad\, he volunteered to do so on behalf of the Chaitanya Math. \nBhaktivilas Tirtha Maharaj replied that Abhay should first join the Caitanya Math. He mentioned the strife that still lingered; “Those who are against Chaitanya Math\, they are motivated by their individual ambitions.” Anyone who was against the Chaitanya Math\, he said was acting illogically and against the instructions of Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati. So according to Tirtha Maharaj\, the thing for Abhay to do\, the thing he had neglected to do for so many years\, was to join the Chaitanya Math and act under his direction. Tirtha Maharaj mentioned several members of the Chaitanya Math who had recently accepted the sannyasa order\, and he said that Abhay could become one – in time. He invited Abhay to come reside at the Chaitanya Math; “The house that we have\, there are rooms that are airy and well lit. We will treat you exclusively. There won’t be any difficulty. We will take care that no inconveniences are caused”. But as for printing books: \nWe are eagerly awaiting to print the books like Satsandarbha\, Vedanta\, based on devotional service\, and many other rare books by the Goswamis. First we will print them. Books written by you will be checked by the editorial staff\, and if the funds can be raised\, then they can be printed according to priority. The books will be printed only if they are favourable for the service of the Chaitanya Math. Therefore\, if the fund is raised\, then there is a plan to go abroad as well. \nAbhay was not encouraged. The main difficulty\, he felt\, was the Chaitanya Math’s shortage of funds.\nSrila Prabhupada: I was working with my broken typewriter. I went to our Tirtha Maharaj: “You give me a room and print my books. Give me some money. I will join you.” I had thought\, “This is Guru Maharaj’s institution.” He did not say no\, but the printing of books was a difficult task for him. He had no money. He was hardly collecting for maintaining. Printing of books is a big job\, and there is no guarantee of sale. \nWithout printing books and going to the West\, sannyasa did not have meaning for Abhay. And who knew when Tirtha Maharaj would sanction his taking sannyasa? There was no point in going to Calcutta just to reside in an airy\, well-lit room; that he had already in Vrindavan. Abhay wrote back to Tirtha Maharaj\, mentioning his direct order from Srila Bhaktisiddhanta to preach to the English-speaking people. He wanted to go to the West right away\, and he had thought that Chaitanya Math would welcome his offer. Both Abhay and tirtha Maharaj had their responsibilities\, but perhaps they could work together to carry out the desire of their spiritual master. Abhay asked Tirtha Maharaj to reconsider.. On May 7th\, 1959\, Bhaktivilas Tirtha Maharaj wrote back. \nMy suggestion is don’t make any hasty decisions. For the time being you stay with us and engage yourself in the service of the society and then accept tridandi (sannyasa). The purpose of accepting tridandi is to serve the society.\nIf that is your desire\, then Sri Chaitanya Math will decide about your going to America to preach and make all the arrangements. It can never be the principle of the society to let one act according to his individual attempt or desire. The society will decide after consulting with the heads what is to be done by whom. That is what I want to say. First of all\, it is necessary to identify oneself with the society. \nIn order to preach in America or in other foreign countries\, it is important to have a dignified organisation in the background and secondly it is necessary to establish one’s self in India before going to preach in the foreign countries. \nNow it is that there are no conferences or meetings in the West as before. Communication is done through the media of television. \nAbhay could understand the needs and priorities of the Chaitanya Math\, but he could not allow them to overrule what he considered the highest mandate; preaching as Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati had ordered. Abhay had offered his services to the leaders of the Chaitanya Math\, thinking they might also see things his way. He thought that with the world’s crying need for Krishna consciousness staring them in the face\, they might see that this Abhay Babu was convinced and enthusiastic and so should be sent right away with whatever he required. But they had other priorities.\nAbhay next turned to Keshava Maharaj in Mathura\, and Keshava Maharaj told Abhay to take sannyasa immediately. After corresponding with Tirtha Maharaj\, Abhay had felt some uncertainty about accepting sannyasa\, and now that he was being encouraged so strongly\, he resisted. But Keshava Maharaj was insistent. \nSrila Prabhupada: I was sitting alone in Vrindavana\, writing. My Godbrother insisted to me “Bhaktivedanta Prabhu\, you must do it. Without accepting the renounced order of life\, nobody can become a preacher.” So he insisted. Not he insisted: practically my spiritual master insisted. He wanted me to become a preacher\, so he forced me through this Godbrother: “You accept.” So\, unwillingly I accepted. \nKeshavaji Gaudiya Math was located in the midst of one of Mathura’s downtown bazaars. Its main entrance\, an arched doorway\, led into a courtyard\, open to the sky through a metal grating above. The architecture was similar to that of the Vamshi-gopalaji temple. The atmosphere was secluded\, as in a monastery. Abhay was a familiar\, welcomed figure here. He had lived here\, written and studied in the library here\, edited the Gaudiya Patrika\, and donated the Deity of Lord Chaitanya who stood on the altar beside the Deities of Radha and Krishna (Sri Sri Radha Vinodavihariji). But his visit during September of 1959 was not an ordinary one. He entered the matha dressed in white\, Abhay Babu\, but he would soon be leaving dressed in saffron\, a swami. \nAbhay had been living as a renunciate for nine years; there was no need for him to observe a ceremony or to proclaim himself a sadhu by changing to saffron dress. But it was the parampara system that a man take tridandi-sannyasa at the end of his life. He was aware of the cheating sannyasis; even in Vrindavana he had seen so-called sadhus who did not preach but simply spent their days hunting for chapatis. Some “swamis” of Vrindavana even indulged illicitly in what they had supposedly come here to reject: sex life. Such persons were making a mockery of sannyasa. And there were the caste goswamis also\, who lived like ordinary householders\, running temples as a business to support their families and accepting honour and donations from the public on the false basis of birth. Abhay knew of these abuses of sannyasa\, but he also knew the real purpose of sannyasa. Sannyasa was for preaching. \nOn the morning of September 17th 1959\, in the fifty-by-twenty-five-foot Deity room on the second floor of the Keshavaji Math\, a group of devotees sat before the Deities of Radha-Krishna and Lord Chaitanya. The Deities were colourfully dressed in royal clothing and silver crowns. Radharani’s right hand faced palm-forward in benediction for the worshipper; at Her side\, Her left hand held a flower for Krishna. Krishna stood like a dancer\, placing His right leg in a casual tiptoe pose before His left\, playing His long silver flute\, which He held gracefully to His red lips. His long black hair reached down past His shoulders\, and the garland of marigolds around his neck reached down to His knees. On His right stood the Deity of Lord Chaitanya\, His right arm raised\, left arm at His side\, His body straight\, feet together. He was a soft golden colour\, and He had large eyes\, a well-formed red mouth\, and straight black hair down to his shoulders. One level below the Deities were pictures of the spiritual masters in disciplic succession: Jagannath dasa Babaji\, Bhaktivinoda Thakura\, Gaurakishora dasa Babaji\, Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati\, Bhaktiprajnana Keshava Maharaj. \nAbhay sat on a mat of kusha grass beside ninety-year old Sanatana\, also to receive sannyasa that day. Sitting opposite the two candidates\, Narayana Maharaj\, Keshava Maharaja’s disciple\, prepared to conduct the ceremony of mantras and offerings of grains and ghee into the fire. Akinchana Krishnadasa Babaji\, Abhay’s Godbrother\, known for sweet singing\, played mrdanga and sang Vaishnava bhajanas. Sitting on a raised asana\, His Holiness B.P. Keshava Maharaj presided. Since there had been no notices or invitations\, only the matha’s few residents attended. \nNarayan Maharaj chanted the required mantras and then sat back silently while B.P. Keshava Maharaj lectured. Then\, to everyone’s surprise\, Keshava Maharaj asked Abhay to speak. Abhay had not expected this. As he looked around at the gathering of devotees\, he understood that the common language was Hindi; only Keshava Maharaj and a few others spoke English. Yet he knew he must speak in English. \nAfter Abhay’s speech\, each initiate received his sannyasa-danda\, the traditional head-high staff made of four bamboo rods bound together and completely enwrapped in saffron cloth. They were given their sannyasa garments: one piece of saffron cloth for a dhoti\, and one for a top piece (uttara)\, and two strips of cloth for underwear (kaupins). They also received Tulasi neck beads and the sannyasa mantra. Keshava Maharaj said that Abhay would now be known as Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaj and that Sanatana would be Muni Maharaj. After the ceremony\, the two new sannyasis posed for a photo\, standing on either side of their sannyasa-guru\, who sat in a chair. \nB.P. Keshava Maharaj didn’t impose any strictures on Abhay; he simply encouraged him to go on preaching. Yet Abhay knew that to become A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami did not mean merely that he was giving up family\, home comforts\, and business. That he had done five years ago. Changing from white cloth to saffron cloth\, from Abhay Babu to Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaj\, had a special significance: it was only a matter of time before Bhaktivedanta Swami would travel to the West as Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati had ordained. This was Bhaktivedanta Swami’s realization of his new sannyasa status. \nThe Gaudiya Patrika’s account of the sannyasa initiation included a biographical sketch of Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaj\, listing the major events of his life. The article concluded: \nSeeing his enthusiasm and ability to write articles in Hindi\, English and Bengali\, Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Maharaj gave him the instruction to take tridandi-sannyasa. For nearly one year he had been ready to accept sannyasa. In the month of Bhadra\, on the day on which Vishvarupa accepted sannyasa\, Bhaktivedanta Swami at the Sri Keshavaji Gaudiya Math accepted sannyasa from the founder of the Vedanta Samiti\, Bhaktiprajnana Keshava Maharaj. Seeing him accept his ashram of renunciation\, seeing this pastime for accepting the renounced order of life\, we have attained great affection and enthusiasm.

SUMMARY:Third Month of Caturmasya Begins 27th Sept 2026
DESCRIPTION:Third month: No milk (if required\, it can be mixed with a drop of lemon juice). \nCaturmasya stands for ‘four months’. It is the period between sayana and uttana ekadasis. The scriptures refer to this period as the duration of Lord Visnu’s sleep in this universe. \nThe main goal of observing Caturmasya is to decrease attachment to material things and to increase devotion to Krishna.\nSrila Prabhupada writes in Caitanya Caritamrta\, “Caturmasya should be observed by all sections of the population.
