Eco-friendly festivities at ISKCON Punjabi Bagh

This year, Janmashtami at ISKCON Punjabi Bagh was preceded by 2 evenings of Kalash Abhishek. Thousands of donors and well-wishers come over to have darshans and personally bathe the lord. This is followed by special prasadam for all the visitors. This year, keeping in mind the objective of minimizing plastic usage, ISKCON Punjabi Bagh’s festival committee decided to do something different. Instead of hosting its guests in the temple premises, the temple installed a huge 15,000 square feet pandal in front of the temple. This allowed more than enough space to serve the full meal dinner prasad to approximately 6500 visitors on tables and chairs. While this might sound ordinary, its implications were extraordinary – by doing so the temple management could do away with the disposable plastic cutlery that they had to use each year to serve the guests prasad on the floor. Proper furnishing allowed the use of biodegradable cutlery which is generally less firm than plastic. Because of this change, the temple ensured responsible disposal of 7500 plates and spoons. Notably, no plastic pet bottles of water were served during these 2 days or during Janmashtami, Balaram Purnima, Prabhupada Vyas Puja, and Radhastami. This led to reduction in consumption of 60,000 plastic bottles which would have otherwise gone to the landfills. With each passing year, ISKCON Punjabi Bagh aims to serve the community more responsibly by reducing its adverse footprint on the planet.
