Sri Krishna Das Kaviraja Goswami has written: “Ramadasa, Kavidatta, Sri Gopala dasa, Bhagavat Acharya, and Thakura Saranga dasa were all important branches of the Sri Caitanya tree.”  (C.C. adi 10.113)

According to Kavikarnapura’s Gaura-ganodesa-dipika, “That person who was formerly the gopi called Nandimukhi in Vraja-lila appeared in the pastimes of Sri Chaitanya as Saranga Thakura.

Sri Saranga Thakura lived near the Ganges River at Navadvipa and performed his daily worship with deep concentration and love. Although he was a great Vaishnava, he preferred solitude and did not seek disciples or followers.

However, on one occasion, Lord Chaitanya personally instructed him to initiate a disciple. Out of obedience, Sri Saranga Thakura decided that whoever he saw first the next morning would receive initiation.

The next day, he saw the body of a young boy who had just passed away. Following the Lord’s order with complete faith, he chanted the holy names and touched the boy, who immediately came back to life.

The boy was then initiated by Sri Saranga Thakura and became known as Murari Thakura, one of the Lord’s dear devotees. This pastime beautifully illustrates the unlimited mercy and spiritual potency of a pure devotee of the Lord.

Saranga Ṭhākura’s deities were served in the town of Mamgachi. The original temple was built in front of a bakula tree. The deities of Radha Gopinath worshiped by him can be seen in this temple, as can the deity of Mahāprabhu’s other associate, Vasudeva Datta Ṭhākura, Śrī Madana Gopal.

Sri Saranga Thakura’s disappearance day is a reminder that the Lord’s devotees never truly leave this world. Their presence continues through their teachings, example, and the mercy they bestow on sincere seekers.

All glories to Sri Saranga Thakura
All glories to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Nityananda Prabhu
All glories to all the associates of the Lord who spread His mercy throughout the world
